"Not a lot of people know this........" Re Train Journey North
"Not a lot of people know this........" Re Train Journey North
I would have just added comments in the tune section but the tune in question isn't there....
Pardon my ignorance but I assumed for many years that "The Train Journey North" was composed by the late Tom Anderson from Shetland.
In fact, it was a different Tom Anderson who is an Irish piper and the journey in question was actually between Dublin and Belfast. I'd assumed it was The North of Scotland.
This tune is very popular in Scotland and was included on the first Easy Club album and, of course, Jim Sutherland comes from Caithness. So, that's probably why I was misled.
Any more info about this tune and composer would be very welcome.

Thanks I'd assumed the same.
Just got out Easy Club and Jim's tune book. I'm playing The Innocent Railway a lot, and found the attribution to Tom Anderson for Train Journey.... i must admit I didn't think it sounded Shetlandish!

From what I can find out, the composer of the tune was Pipe Major Tom Anderson. who was with St Patrick's Donaghmore pipe band at the time. He was a highland piper and Scottish (the only non Irish winner of the IPBA solo piping championship).

Would "this member is resting" be the same as "the cage door is open but the beast is asleep?"

I think it was Robbie Shepherd who mentioned the two Tom Andersons this weekend when he played a recording of this tune
Program's still on iPlayer for 3 more days if you're in the UK

If I decide to say something more controversial, I surely will do

I always thought that it was Jim Sutherland who wrote this tune.

He appears to be living in Canada now.
