We're playing a "bon voyage" gig for some friends who are Ireland-bound, and we'd like to wish them "bon voyage" in Irish. Can anyone get me close phonetically?
Paul
"Go neiri an bothar leat" (literally "May the road rise with you")
The plural would be "go neiri an bothar libh"
Phonetically? Here goes!
"Guh nyree un bow har lath" or in the plural:
"Guh nyree un bow har liv"
Hope this is helpful!
Muireann
Yes, it's helpful! Thank you!
How is it accented? And is that "nyree" pronounced with a long i sound? Like NIE-ree? Is "bow" like "cow" or is it a long oh sound?
Paul
Cathie Ryan sings Dermot Henry's Slan Abhaile on her album ("Cathie Ryan"). There's a 30-second clip of the chorus you can listen to on Amazon's listing for the album. The chorus lyrics from her web site:
Slan abhaile, slan go foill
Safe home, good luck until we meet again
Beidh mo chroi seo briste gan thu a stor
This heart of mine will be broken without you my love
No go gcasfad aris orainn
Until we meet again
Eist is bi ag smaoineamh
Listen and be thinking
Ar an gceol 'ta ag teacht
On the music that is coming
O mo chroi seo amach
From the depths of my heart.
How do you say it?

Re: How do you say it?
Or you could say Slán abhaile, which means safe home.
Pronounced Slan a wella

Re: How do you say it?
Long i sound, (as in 'diary') and long o sound (as in 'Moher' [Cliffs of]). And you could say Slan abhaile (as suggested by Breandan) as well!
