As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

Where will it all end?
Does it matter?

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

No, probably not, but soon, when there are enough Members, Phase 2 begins, which we be launched from Jeremy's secret island hideout. Soon we take over the world! MOO HOO HA HA HA!

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

It circles the world in a grip of vice, round and round and round and round and round and round and round for ever and ever and ever.

None of us can ever get out now, whether we go with the direction of The Session / the music or against it...

there must be a threshold of total pointlessness...75,000, 95,000, 200,000?

or maybe we reached it after 2,000

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

It's interesting that at 60000+ members, the number of active members in the discussions doesn't seem any different than when it had 10000 members, although, the turnover has been dramatic. Probably 95%.

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

It's still fewer than the number of people who live in Hartlepool, where they elected the football team's monkey-impersonating mascot as Mayor. Acquittal on charges of simulating lewd acts in his monkey-suit rendered him eligible.

Actually, by the standards of NE local politicians he was one of the more sensible ones. I mean, really.

Not that this has anything to do with anything - BUT: If The Session became a city state, I wonder who its prominent officers and other people might be...

Floss...again, I ask the existenial question:

50/50,000/500,000 where will it end?

my feeling is, anything pretty much over 30 people and it's hopeless.

what's the biggest lecture hall in university? maybe 500? beyond that it's hopeless surely. and even then 500 hundred is pretty hopeless.

jeremy should have capped it at 30 perhaps.

As the session passed the 38,000 member mark

"Here's what I've been able to ascertain:
The total number of members is: 38144
The number of members who have not posted a comment is: 31734
So the number of members actively contributing (if you count any kind of comment as a contribution) is: 6410
If my calculations are correct, that puts the percentage of active contributors at 16.8%
That sounds about right and is par for the course for most membership-based sites."

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

Llig...kids keep you young. cliche, but true.On the other hand, they also allow you to be old gracefully. The choice is yours. They like both, at different times, and different stages. Which is the magic of children in allowing us to find out those amazing parts of ourselves which perhaps we've forgot in the silliness of being an adult.

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

60,000 = 5,000 sessions of 12 people apiece...

I wonder if The Session can muster 1 Ambassador to the Real World, not counting Jeremy, who may have Real World skills, but might demand as of right a more august position.

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

I think of the assigned membership numbers here as exactly like those on "The Prisoner" (the Patrick McGoohan version). I await a similar psychedelic finale for this site, where #6 sees #2 in the gorilla costume (through a woozy, warping fish-eye lens, lit by strobe lights).

I, as #35542, will probably see this in the finale: jack squat.

Fear the giant beach ball.

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

. . . 60,131 & counting . . .

# Posted on October 29th 2009 by Random_notes

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

If you do a blank search in the Members section it will tell you (as of this moment) that the number of members is 59482. Why is it less than the quoted 60131 or so mentioned in Random's last comment? The reason must be because some people have voluntarily left The Session permanently, and others have been ejected (not suspended) summarily for good reason. I think that in both cases the relevant membership number must henceforth be left unused otherwise almighty confusion would ensue on the database.

ejected spam members?

# Posted on October 29th 2009 by Random_notes

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

Trevor, I don't think there is any leaving of thesess voluntarily. Once you're in the database, yer in, unless Jeremy removes you ... and 60,000 is twice the population of the centre of Oz ... so is pretty darn impressive to me. Yay thesession!

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

According to a song by Emily Kaitz, it is the bass players who are going to take over the world instead of the members of this web site despite what SWFL Fiddler said.

# Posted on October 30th 2009 by fauxcelt

Emily Kaitz

They put drugs in the drummer's drink,
And they tied up all the guitar players
With their big ol' flat-wound strings.
And on that day the world it was finally set free,
All the creatures they hung out together and interacted fretlessly,
And the air began to vibrate with such a deep tonality,
The day the bass players took over the world.

# Posted on October 30th 2009 by Random_notes

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

Thank you for posting some of the words to the song, Random_notes.

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

You're welcome, Random_notes.
I got to hear Emily Kaitz perform this song in person approximately fifteen years ago at a local folk music venue when I went to hear Ray Wylie Hubbard perform. She was one of the musicians in Hubbard's band. He took a break during his show to let her perform her song about the bass players taking over the world.

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

I too know someone who left a couple of years ago of his own wish (probably not the same member mentioned by Random). His membership number is no longer in use so you won't find any of his posts.
Yes, some "members" who have joined apparently with the sole purpose of advertising or spamming usually disappear within a couple of days, along with all evidence of their brief sojourn here. An example of a good and well-controlled website.

I knew the centre of Oz was pretty bad but I didn't realise it was *quite* so rebarbative to the human race.

How far does "the centre" stretch? Sidney to Perth?

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

60,000 members, and 59,990 can't get a word in edgewise.

Same 10 people talking about the same 4 stagnant topics over and over again, with the occasional troll trying to rile everybody up. Rinse and repeat ad nauseam.

# Posted on October 30th 2009 by awildman

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

Thank you for the welcome back Random.

John Morrison of Assynt House IS a great reel. I first heard it done by Alain Stivell and fiddler Rene Werneer.

I agree with awildman; one of the reasons I stopped coming here regularly was the sense of deja vu in all the threads.

I hate to sound like an old git (but I will anyway); when I first joined many of the threads stayed around for days with many postings. Nowadays with one or two exceptions (usually about notation v. playing by ear ....yawn!) many of the threads are gone within minutes. This is either because everything that could be said, has already been said about this topic or the thread does not raise that much interest in the first place. Either way it is the law of diminishing returns for all the old lags who remember the good old days of Tanya Lee Teraoshi. Who was she and where DID she go?

I looked through some of my old threads and the names of most of the posters there are seldom seen now so I suppose their enthusiasm has gone the same way as mine, but it would be good to hear from them all again.

Happy 60,000th anyway :)

I miss Tanya, too Geoff. One of the better "wind-ups". I believe Tanya was "Mullingarred", as they say.[ Rhyming slang for "barred" , before someone asks].

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

Whew, bass players eh? I always knew they were dangerous.

With this place, like anything else, it's what you make of it. If you think it's useless and is all garbage now, it will be that for you. If you think it's amusing to bump brains with witty, like-minded folk and rehash stale topics for newbies in the hope they'll cause less damage to the world at large, then it will be that too.

Now the real plan comes into view. We use the membership bass to round up the bass players in a preventative strike...

Re: As the session passes the 60,000 member mark

Thank you for posting that link, Shanty--although I think there is something "Fishy" in it.
In my alter ego (when I am not pretending to be a piano player), I am a bass player.
Since I play for two different churches every Sunday, maybe I should say "altar" ego instead.
Yes, Ian (otherwise known as SWFL Fiddler), us bass players are much more dangerous than anyone realizes because we are such expert "Fish"ermen.
However, we are waiting for Emily Kaitz to give us the word and lead us in our takeover of the world because she is the guilty party who started this by writing a certain song.
With a last name like "Kaitz", her ancestors were probably German which means that she is our "Lieder". Why? Because she writes songs.
