I wonder if the one on the left isn't showing the Jerusalem skyline, with maybe the Dome Of The Rock just showing at the left. Anyway, somewhere a bit bright-looking for Ireland.
Seriously - Sean McGuire had an album out in 1970 called 'Champion of Champions'. He had a two Irish Wolfhounds featured on the cover with a young girl Stella McGuire, probably a granddaughter. This could well be another of McGuires albums from around that time Just a hunch!
They're the right size for album covers, I'd say. You're not going to be advertising anyone else's album if it's impossible to recognise the sleeve. There's also writing on the top of the right hand sleeve, although it's obscured by the Clifford's names. You don't normally get that on pictures. I don't recognise them at all - maybe better hand over to "Floss".
It's not any McGuire sleeve that I recognise.
Isn't that a third sleeve just behind Julia's head?
The tracks were recorded in Lucy and Eric Farr's kitchen Ladywell London (by Reg Hall); Camus Cross Co Tipperary (by Hugh Miller and Alan Ward) and Stamford Hill London (by Alan Ward). It is a fair bet that the photographer attended one of these to take the cover photo and some Topic LP covers were used to dress a boring looking mantle piece.
Hmmm I had to use some image enhancing software on this one but with a bit of work I was able to shed some light on the issue.
The first one came out like this: http://www.zonicweb.net/badalbmcvrs/geraldine2.jpg
Every time I look at that sleeve with the Irish Wolfhound on it, I get a feeling that I've come across it years ago. I'm surprised that nobody has come up with an answer. I hate been left in suspenders.
I'm the same Free Reed. Looks like nobody knows but now that the question has lodged in the backs of our minds, the answer will occur eventually. Keep browsing the second hand record shelves
Yes the album was recorded at Lucy Farr's. I used to play with her, and even after she moved to a flat she still had a huge collection of albums. It could be anyone. Somewhere `i have an old topic catalogue with lots of photos and some material from Outlet records, so I'll have a look.
Don't think it is a wolfhound, it looks like a picture of a crossroads dance. Sorry to disappoint!
Hi Sharon,
Paper catalogues may provide the answer. Topic and Outlet catalogues don't seem to have made it onto the web. Thanks for taking the trouble to look.
Have now searched the Topic catalogue to no avail. However, perusal of old photographs that I have of the Favourite, that is the identical fireplace, same marquetry etc. My photographs have flock wallpaper, and were taken in about 1978, so guess it was before then. The fireplace is decorated with a fringe of lace in my photo. the albums on the mantlepiece then included Jimmy Power's solo album and the record by Tommy Healy and Johnny Duffy. Also a sign that rerads "No Dancing Please'! SO, that photo was taken in the Favourite.
Anyone who played at the Favourite and had an album out would add it to the collection on the mantlepiece and other shelves. Could be anyone, but my money's still on Outlet.
Hope that helps, Sharon
Does this mean I'm Real Hardcore? Or just mad?
Thanks Sharon. You may not have provided the answer but that is an interesting little insight into the social life, and indeed the the decor, of the Favourite.
Maybe someone else's memory will be jogged.
Answer to your question -probably both
Thanks for your appreciation of my insights! I have not provided the answer but I will keep looking - the picture of the wolfhound at the crossroads dance will stay with me for a long time!
If you like, I could email you the relevant photos of the Favourite mantelpiece. Let me know.
All the best, Sharon
One for the real hardcore...
One for the real hardcore...
What are the two albums on the mantelpiece in the background of 'The Star of Munster Trio' album cover?
There's only one sessioneer who can answer that...
Or maybe not...

The one of the left could be the dogs among the bushes album. You know the one where the dog jumps out and surpises passersby.

I'd ask for a refund on that software, Conan.

'Maybe better hand over to Floss'.
Well, you can hand over to me as much as you'd like, Kenny (but preferably these - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:EUR_500_obverse_(2002_issue).jpg).
I do know the identities of both albums (though obviously not the one behind Julia's head), but I think I'll keep my counsel for the moment.
