Paul Brady's 'Welcome Here Kind Stranger'

Paul Brady's 'Welcome Here Kind Stranger'

Paul Brady has re-issued his classic album, but does anybody know whether it's available on CD? His web site mentions 'this newly re-mastered CD version' but there are only individual track downloads on the site. It would be nice to get the whole package as a CD.

There aren't any contact details on the site, so it's impossible to get any information.

I have it on CD. Picked it up at Celtic Connections a couple of years ago.

Re: Paul Brady's 'Welcome Here Kind Stranger'

Paul states on his site that 'this album was never released officially on CD, although an inferior bootleg version mastered from a scratchy vinyl copy found its way on to the market in the mid 80s purporting to be the official version.' He also says it's scratchy and has clicks on it.

I saw the CD in the shops in Dublin, although I never bought a copy at the time.

Blimey! I am sure the shop that sold me it would be surprised to find out it is a bootleg copy. There are some very quiet vinyl noises on the CD but they are not overly noticeable.

I presume my copy of Andy Irvine/Paul Brady is the same then - also on Mulligan.

Re: Paul Brady's 'Welcome Here Kind Stranger'

To clarify, at some point during the increasingly convoluted dealings surrounding Mulligan Records in the late 1970s and early 1980s the rights to various albums were sold to other labels.

A certain Dave Bulmer of Celtic Music Records acquired the rights to 'Welcome Here Kind Stranger' (amongst others, including The Bothy Band's first album) and it was he who released a CD version of the album. Since he did not have access to the master tape he simply used a vinyl copy of the album as his source. Bulmer's sharp practices have been discussed at length on The Mudcat Cafe - http://www.mudcat.org.

I'm not sure whether Paul ever did get around to releasing the remastered album - it's certainly not available anywhere, though you can download the MP3s from his site.

NCfA, you've no need to worry about the Irvine/Brady album since that was one of the few of which Mulligan retained control.

Shame that so many artists were out of pocket, having produced such great music. It's quite a saga.

I'll try Paul's MP3s.

Thanks for the info everyone.

Yes, the CD has been officially re-released by Paul Brady. I bought a copy about a year ago in a typical record store in Kilkenny. It contains much of the same material as his live "Liberty Tapes" album.

Re: Paul Brady's 'Welcome Here Kind Stranger'

I've a few Bulmer/Sharp CDs that are just recordings of the vinyl. A bit annoying, but they are not that bad. If you were OK to release the vinyl in the first place, why complain about the sound? It's the same music, and that's what really matters.

Re: Paul Brady's 'Welcome Here Kind Stranger'

I believe Bulmer has copyright to most Nic Jones works - he could do with the rights saying he's still recouperating after that car crash - but, doesn't seem like he will.

Re: Paul Brady's 'Welcome Here Kind Stranger'

You can also buy FLAC files at the Paul Brady site. That's what I did and then converted them to ALAC for import into iTunes.

The 'official' download has been available for a wee while now (since Paul regained the rights) but the CD re-issue is more recent (it was announced on Mike Hardings Radio 2 programme).

I was wondering there is a bit of noticable wow (tape speed changing) on the download files (intro to Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore is noticeably off putting) and I was half wondering if that had been fixed for the CD release. Can someone who has the 'official' CD confirm or deny?
