mud, but fine iconic mud. nice to see them all onstage. and i think the humours is a great tune, not played often enough. high time for me to learn it.
The sound doesn't do any favours of course, but if Liam O'Flynn Sean Keane and Paddy Glackin were playing in your local would it not be a sin to have two guitarists and keys playing along, no matter how accomplished they were?
The backing is too heavy. Doesn't add anything or do any favours to to the melody but is sort of a noise behind them. The acoustics of the place don't help.
I was utterly baffled by the PA arrangement - the only mics I could see were low down in front of Liam O'Flynn, no sign of anyone being DI'd or anything, and of course the hall acoustics did no favours.
Also, didn't they think Paul Brady was enough of a guitarist ?
And, of course, why the bloody synth ?
The first two bars seem OK, then the reverb kicks in. Maybe somebody added it to the video afterwards. In any case it was horrible. To be fair to the guitarists, one of them was playing the melody line.
The first few bar are fine because that's before the synth kicks in, not the reverb. As yes, Arty McGlynn picks the first tune but the synth detracts not adds.
The keyboard is awful. But I'd have no problem with Arty or Paul accompanying any of us at our sessions. Of course the posters here know more about music than either McGlynn or Brady. Especially the person who called it "Dull, lifeless mud..." I've no doubt that person is an accomplished musician.
Ah. That would be me. No. Just a n00b. But I wasn't in the least commenting on the musicianship. They're great musicians. But putting all that lot together, along with reverb, synth, too many people etc etc, makes a mush that saps the life out of it, brilliant musicians though they are, and makes it impossible to hear properly. Hence, very difficult to appreciate.
Ahh but McGlynn and Brady are of course just accompanists. That, as we know, is not really the same thing. They might be musicians but they are certainly not musicians.
cocus, it has nothing to do with accomplishment. Their skills have been dulled because of the tune being swamped, in the same way that lesser accomplished tune players can be dulled by too many accompanists in a session.
Is the problem the fact that there are as many accompanists/backup musicians as there are melody players? Maybe there should be fewer accompanists than melody players. Although I am a piano player myself, I have to wonder why an electronic keyboard player was also included. I thought there were already enough instruments on the stage.
Glue or Mud?
Glue or Mud?
Great players but how do folk feel about two guitars and keys playing with three leads. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szLBmn9qAps&feature=rec-fresh+div So, is it glue or mud? Mud to me.

Re: Glue or Mud?
Mud to me too . The sound is awful like playing in an echo chamber . Sounds like a PA issue rather than a music issue.

you're all buttheads - we've had 4 guitars and 5 bodhrans at our sessions and it didn't sound anywhere near as good

Re: Glue or Mud?
IMHO:
Another case of someone saying,
"Hey, you know, we COULD get all these grand artists together on stage for one big hoedown!" -
and noone asks,
"Hey - do you really think we SHOULD?"
They should have given them each 6 minutes as soloists instead.
Another opportunity lost.
WAH!
(loved the synthesizer, though - perfect with uilleanns)

Re: Glue or Mud?
Mind, not being "an accomplished musician", I suppose I've probably also got defective hearing, and therefore no right to an opinion.

Re: Glue or Mud?
I don't know about swamped or dulled, but I've been driven homicidal by the ol' accompanist quick sand before.

4 guitars + 5 bodhrans + a member on a typewriter.
I agree, airport has given us one of the best comments ever. ;)

Re: Glue or Mud?
Has Donald Dewar been re-incarnated as a keyboard player ? 2 players too many on that stage.
