8 Hand Jig title

8 Hand Jig title

Hi - I have the Olive Hurley Ceili Collection CD, and the second track is titled ``8 Hand Jig``. Is that the actual title, or is there another name for the tune?

Re: 8 Hand Jig title

I think you will find it's the name of the dance rather than the tune.

Bazouki Dave is right ... it's the name of the dance... but not the tune.

The first tune is popularly know as the 'Jig from Lord of the Dance" which is part of the dance called 'Breakout'

Not sure what the second tune is called.

Re: 8 Hand Jig title

Hi - I got confused, because most of the tracks are titled with the tune name, such as Haste to the Wedding.

I had no idea this was from LOTD; I thought it was a traditional tune. Thanks very much!

Re: 8 Hand Jig title

It was also turned into a (imho) dreadful song/hymn thingy called "Lord of the Dance" long before Mr. Flatley put his show together. Here's the Dubliners doing it:

Re: 8 Hand Jig title

I did wonder if the origional song was about spinning about getting dizzy hyperventalating and having a religious experiane bit like Christian whirling dervishes.
