I am planning to go to Scotland in a few weeks to live for about 2 years. I was wanting to bring my bodhran (sorry! I have no accent control for that a!); however, I was just informed that people don't really like it when people bring bodhran's to sessions. They make jokes about them (which i already knew), but is it really that unappreciated? I play both bodhran and tin whistle, so it is not as if I am ALWAYS playing the bodhran- is that acceptable? Is it just because everyone plays the bodhran, that it gets a bit... annoying? I'm not really sure if it's such a good idea to bring it overseas with me now!
Don't worry too much about the banter on this site. Sadly bodhran players seem to be the equivalent of Kerry or Essex girls when in comes to jokes. Ignore this lot, take yer bodhran and whistle to Scotland and enjoy yerself. Don't bloody worry about it. Where abouts in Scotland are you going? Maybe someone on this site could give you some hints on the nearest sessions etc.
Try to find a bodhràn player by the name of Paul Schaffner (I think he's still in Edinburgh). He'll know about bodhrans, sessions etc.
Say hello from me.
Thank you! I don't know anyone in Scotland- no family or friends, nothing! That will be great help- and I think I could do with some help from someone who knows a bit about bodhrans (so I can avoid being the butt of all jokes, and just be the butt of some!)
I'll go to all of them eventually! I'm going over to hopefully have some luck pitching my CD around... so we'll see which city I'll love best by the end of my visit!
The best places to start with are Edinburgh and Glasgow for the most regular sessions although better ones may be found elsewhere. At the risk of a reprimand from Jeremy(Some of these may already be listed in the Sessions section) try Sandy Bell's, Edinburgh, Victoria Bar(Frid), Babbity Bowsters(Sat), both Glasgow to start off. There are many others depending on exactly what you want. Try the Old Pier at Portobello on a Thursday. They don't worry about bodhrans--In fact, they've got five already
But seriously, the first few pubs, I've mentioned are fine and a good starting point.
Do you play whistle too? That's exactly what our band are looking for. We're based in Glasgow. Currently down to a 3 piece but looking to expand. All scottish/Irish Jigs n' reels. Gimmie a call;
You guess kick arse man! I'm going to have a blast now! And by the sounds of it, I won't be spending a lot of time in Edinburgh; sounds like most of the music is coming out of Glasgow!
Craig- your invitation is welcome to me, and I'll give you a call without question! I might not be up to the calaber that you want me to be at though, so we'll have to see (that's the intire point of me going to Scotland, is to get better at my instroment of choice ;))

Re: Bodhran
Why does everyone say Glasgow is better?! I went to Edinburgh once and it wasn't as bad as all that!

Re: Bodhran
Edinburgh and Glasgow are both great but not as good as Aberdeen...

Re: Bodhran
Anyone from Inverness like to put in a pitch for me? :p

Re: Bodhran
Yeah, Aberdeen's great too, and Inverness. Both even further away from Edinburgh than Glasgow

Re: Bodhran
Adela!
You will get used to Michael's sense of humour eventually. We have.
He is being, what we call over here, ironic. Bless him!
Go to Edinburgh! He really wants you to ...just doesn't want to appear too eager.
