Bobby Casey on The British Library Archive

Bobby Casey on The British Library Archive

Reg Hall has a lot of old recordings on the archive. Well worth a look around if you haven't seen it

Reg Hall on Bobby Casey

‘…although his lonesome fiddle playing reeked of rural Ireland, it was equally the voice of the Irish working men who settled in great numbers in north London…his real forte was playing his heart out for his friends in some quiet pub in Kentish Town for little fame and no fortune. He is for many of us one of the greatest artists Ireland has produced.’

Re: Bobby Casey on The British Library Archive

Cool. That site's slower than grandma at the mall, though.

Here's a few interesting items in the first 10 pages though:

John Doonan, Ace and Deuce of Pipering: http://sounds.bl.uk/View.aspx?item=025M-C0903X0101XX-0400V0.xml

Tommy Kearney, An Coulin: http://sounds.bl.uk/View.aspx?item=025M-C0903X0163XX-1600V0.xml

Joe Hutton, Boolavogue: http://sounds.bl.uk/View.aspx?item=025M-C0903X0011XX-0600V0.xml

Jimmy Power, Andy McGann's Reel: http://sounds.bl.uk/View.aspx?item=025M-C0903X0489XX-0600V0.xml

I'm going to mash all the separate pages into one for convenience. Sounds like the audio is a bit lossy but that's life. The above items are interesting enough to wet my appetite.

Re: Bobby Casey on The British Library Archive

Browse the Traditional Music of England section and you can see all Reg's stuff at once: http://sounds.bl.uk/Browse.aspx?category=World-and-traditional-music&collection=Traditional-music-in-England

I'm going to cue this up first:

"Maid at the spinning wheel / Do you want any more? / Knights of St Patrick / Richard Brennan's jig: Performer's note: Electric organist could be Reg Hall; see Reg Hall's notes in IMC file."

;) Reg, you old lounge lizard!

Ah, it doesn't seem to be working. This one is, however, from the "Ethnographic Wax Cylinders" section: http://sounds.bl.uk/View.aspx?item=025M-C0037X1591XX-0100V0.xml

Recording date: 1915
Recording locations: Ireland
Performers: Brewe, Frank (whistle)

EFDSS Cylinder 57; 1. Mauryeen nea gìbbìrland (really Máirín ní Chuib..cannéin); Key G. 2. Humours of Bandan; Key D; 3. Billy Byrne of Ballymena; Key G.

That's about the oldest Irish whistling on record, I think. There is a cylinder with Chief O'Neill and Ed Cronin, with the Chief playing the whistle, I've never heard it however.

Thanks for bringing this up!

Re: Bobby Casey on The British Library Archive

Try the Terry Yarnell collection: http://sounds.bl.uk/Browse.aspx?category=World-and-traditional-music&collection=Traditional-music-in-England&browseby=Browse+by+Sound+Archive+collection&choice=Terry+Yarnell+Collection

Willie Clancy, Tommy Peoples, PJ Crotty, Paddy O'Brien, Seamus Tansey, Paddy Carty. You know, the lot. Also Dublin piper Dan O'Dowd, Packie and Miko Russell. Breandan McGlinchey, Kevin Burke.

A page about Terry Yarnell: http://www.traditionbearers.com/htmfiles/peoplepage_009_terryyarnell.htm

Brendan McGlinchey - Dr Gilbert, Queen of May
Brendan McGlinchey - Drowsie Maggie, Farewell to Ireland
Brendan McGlinchey - Groves Hornpipe
Brendan McGlinchey - Jenny's Welcome to Charlie
Brendan McGlinchey - Kitty Come Down From Limerick, Crowley's Reels, Lucy Campbell

Anyone who knows a name for the lovely reel in C he plays before the Pigeon, let me know. Link: http://sounds.bl.uk/View.aspx?item=025M-C1005X0021XX-0400V0.xml Sounds like Cronin's: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/5998

Re: Bobby Casey on The British Library Archive

Can anybody email me Reg Hall's email address. I seem to have mislaid the one he gave me at the TG4 Awards Ceremony back in April.
Thanks

Kevin, many thanks for the Breandan McGlinchey tracks - and for naming the unnamed!
