"Gavin’s mien is like that of a champion body builder: he equates technical prowess with a sign of rude good health when all he’s really doing is engaging in cold musical muscle flexing."
Re: Are the infamous 'makey-uppy fake tribute band' here to stay?
Wow - what a review! And, sadly, it might contain some truth.
I think back now to a recording I have of Gavin doubled with a fine box player, a set of reels.
As i listened, the first reel through the middle of the second was rather brilliant, IMHO.Then things got ugly.
Over the top.
Busy.
Crowded.
Overpopulated.
Stifling.
Nauseating.
You couldn't hear the tune for all the stuff crammed in.
The phrase "cold musical muscle flexing" pretty much summed it up - blasts of technical braggadoccio, simply because one can rather than because one should.
Re: Are the infamous 'makey-uppy fake tribute band' here to stay?
What I don't understand in all this is the decision to include the old band name at all. Surely the Frankie Gavin name on its own is one of the strongest brands in the music. Unless he was just trying to prove a point about ownership.
Re: Are the infamous 'makey-uppy fake tribute band' here to stay?
I don't know why people are so upset about this.
The Who, REM, the Rolling Stones, the Doobey Brothers - lots
of pop bands do not have their original lineup any more. Why
should De Danann be held to some other standard?

"I don't know why people are so upset about this.

The reason is because Alec Finn has copyrighted the name DeDanann for all the original band members. Therefore the new DeDannan (Note the slight difference in spelling) is in breach of copyright law. I doubt very much that the slight spelling difference will be enough to get round the law. It is obvious that Frankie and his new cronies are trying to get work by false pretence. The intention is to mislead.
Re: Are the infamous 'makey-uppy fake tribute band' here to stay?
The niceties of copyright law - while they might work for the good cause here - don't seem to be enough to get this many people this upset. The problem is that in the cases mentioned, the original members are either deceased or separated amicably from the operation (in the case of REM, where Bill Berry retired due to health problems) where in the case of Gavin's Irish Music Making Ensemble (henceforth to be referred to by the acronym) the original members who are alive and active in the music are being shut out. Imagine John Lennon coming out in 1975 under the name "John Lennon and the Beetles".
Gavin's still a great fiddle player, and he should be able to do fine touring under his own name. The fact that he's acting in such a crass fashion is what bugs me about all this.
Re: Are the infamous 'makey-uppy fake tribute band' here to stay?
O fu CKhris sakes...
All you whingey little toerags who take delight in running other musicians in to the ground...I have no time nor respect for.
The fact that some of you who can play take enjoyment out of seeing an incomparable talent cut down (tall poppy style) in tabloid-esque rants delivered by pompous talentless hacks who think a thesaurus gives them the right to publish bullshight gets close to engorging my membranes.
Let's get this clear...I don't care if you do/don't agree with Mr Gavins' way of playing the fiddle/flute_or the way he runs his business. It is his business and his livelihood. Why wouldn't he wish to protect it?
Casting a look back over the last 100 years of fiddling (Irish and otherwise) I'm pretty sure Frankie Gavin will be remembered for his playing.
I doubt anyone contributing to this discussion will be. (Self included)
I suppose the best a lot of people on this board can do is hope their inane comments are remembered by some other equally talentless moronic excuse for a musician playing Irish Traditional Music.

I would suggest that the rants and raves of the above entries are at least as valid as yours. Commiserating about a tragedy in our midst is part of the concept of "community".
I believe many here actually care about it, when we see members of this musical community wronged in this fashion.

Bald paddywhackery!
Maybe this deserves a discussion of its own, but check out this review in Friday's Irish Times:
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/features/2009/0828/1224253396005.html
The show "Women of Ireland" is savaged, and Frankie and de Dannans cop it as well.
God I love reading a bad review. Don't know why.

I thought her "F.G. and his recalibrated De Danaan" was a nice touch, while slagging off his cold technical precision.

What a shame, especially when you listen to hies earlier output, fx. his first recording with Alec Finn - one of my all time favourites.
