It is August and time to start thinking about.....Christmas!

It is August and time to start thinking about.....Christmas!

In my annual exercise in getting our Liturginazi away from the Amy Grant Tripe and maudlin claptrap of the Big Church Music Sausage Mill in Chicago, I am always looking for new arrangements of a few commonly recognizable traditonal Irish pieces that a. might have a nice recording, or b. better yet published spots, or c. even better yet charted vocals/ harmonies.

The one I have been wanting to do is Wexford Carol. For as often recorded, there does not seem to be anything really expceptional for it with spots. Some good recordings, but more bad for such a pretty song.

Also any other ideas that a bunch of singers can do with some nice instrumentation would also be helpful.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

"Mo Ghile Mear" written by Seán Clárach Mac Dhomhnaill (c. 1691-1757).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDlCM_Mwtys

[Irish Gaelic]

Curfa

Sé mo laoch mo Ghile Mear
'Sé mo Chaesar, Ghile Mear,
Suan ná séan ní bhfuaireas féin
Ó chuaigh i gcéin mo Ghile Mear.

Seal da rabhas im' mhaighdean shéimh,
'S anois im' bhaintreach chaite thréith,
Mo chéile ag treabhadh na dtonn go tréan
De bharr na gcnoc is imigéin.

Curfa

Bímse buan ar buairt gach ló,
Ag caoi go cruaidh 's ag tuar na ndeór
Mar scaoileadh uaim an buachaill beó
'S ná ríomhtar tuairisc uaidh, mo bhrón.

Curfa

Ní labhrann cuach go suairc ar nóin
Is níl guth gadhair i gcoillte cnó,
Ná maidin shamhraidh i gcleanntaibh ceoigh
Ó d'imthigh sé uaim an buachaill beó.

Curfa

Ghile Mear 'sa seal faoi chumha,
'S Eire go léir faoi chlócaibh dubha;
Suan ná séan ní bhfuaireas féin
Ó cuaigh i gcéin mo Ghile Mear.

Curfa

Already? I have this thing in my house, no Christmas until Thanksgiving is over. When the turkey is done, the decorations go up. No sense rushing things, all in good time. :-P

Fair play to you though zippy, good man, thinking ahead.

Foggy Dew
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13MQFCfCYdQ

As down the glen one Easter morn
To a city fair rode I,
Their armed lines of marching men
In squadrons passed me by.
No pipe did hum, no battle drum
Did sound its loud tattoo
But the Angelus' bells o'er the Liffey swells
Rang out in the foggy dew.

Right proudly high in Dublin town
Hung they out a flag of war.
'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky
Than at Suvla or Sud el Bar.
And from the plains of Royal Meath
Strong men came hurrying through;
While Brittania's Huns with their long-range guns
Sailed in through the foggy dew.

The bravest fell, and the requiem bell
Rang mournfully and clear
For those who died that Easter-tide
In the springing of the year.
While the world did gaze with deep amaze
At those fearless men but few
Who bore the fight that freedom's light
Might shine through the foggy dew.

And back through the glen I rode again
And my heart with grief was sore
For I parted then with valiant men
Whom I never shall see more
But to and fro
In my dreams I go
And I kneel and pray for you
For slavery fled
Oh, glorious dead
When you fell in the foggy dew

Re: It is August and time to start thinking about.....Christmas!

Composed by a Priest from the North Fr O Neil and first performed in a church in North Belfast in the Whitehouse area by one of the Mc Laughlin sisters, cousin and of Edward Daly. Or so the story goes

Re: It is August and time to start thinking about.....Christmas!

Beinng from Chicago, we have this fine tradition (probably has to do with Chicago's Irish heritage) that if you want something, you need to 'politic' to get everyone in line with what you want to do, or get the person who makes the decision on your side so the decision will go your way no matter what everyone thinks!

That's the reason for starting this early.

We are the same way at our house. Decorations don't go up unti December 16.....Beethoven's Birthday ;-)

Re: It is August and time to start thinking about.....Christmas!

Cherish The Ladies do some nice harmony singing, judging by the album of theirs I've got ("The Girls Won't Leave The Boys Alone"). You could check them out on YouTube if you don't have any music of theirs.

Unfortunately, I work in a salt mine and for long periods of time may not have internet connectivity, or a great deal of time to carefully craft a response to some the the kind postings my threads recieve.

Also because my salt mine has huge security on its data network (once I even had a security clearance where I couldn't tell people what I did) I have to wait until I get home to access web based operations like you tube, face book, twitter etc.

So I won't see what's at the other end of the links until later tonight on my home computer.

No Harm, no foul I hope.

But I do apprecate the responses.

Re: It is August and time to start thinking about.....Christmas!

spindizzy. As you can tell, our saltmine is a bit less physical than Winsford Rocks. But very deep sometimes. Oddly, our youngest daughter has gotten in a line of work where she can't tell us what she does. All that college tuition and all she can say is they pay her well, it's an ok job, only the government guys she works with are allowed to wear side arms, and she keeps getting new colored belts in some martial art that I can't pronounce!

Trucks

thanks for the Anuna suggestion. I totally forgot about them because I never put choral together with ITM. All my vocal recordings are old sean nos. I'll check that out later

Re: It is August and time to start thinking about.....Christmas!

I like Wexford Carol as done by Katie McMahon on her album "Celtic Christmas." You might give it a listen. All a matter of taste of course.
