Re: Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection available

This is an absolutely beautiful book. I got it for all the history and the wonderful photos on it as much as for the tunes. Amazing book, highly recommended!

Re: Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection available

Eileen is down here at the Fleadh in Tullamore and played some selections from the book earlier in the week at the Scoil Éigse. This collection contains not only Paddy's own compositions but also tunes from his own personal repertoire. It's a must for any trad players tune collection in my opinion.

Re: Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection available

I've always been a fan of Paddy's compositions. I know box players say they are very suited to the instrument but, from my own experience, they seem to fit well on any instrument. He wrote many good flute tunes (Swallow's Nest, Happy Man, St. Patrick's night to name a few) and others fit nicely on the banjo. I must admit that I was unaware that the previous publication did not include all of his known compositions. To read that, "There are many compositions in this publication that have never been published or even heard before" is a great plus point for the tradition.

This is certainly on my "to-buy" list along with Vincent Broderick's books.

Re: Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection available

I would like to purchase the collection but could anyone tell me if it has a lay-flat binding, i.e. suitable for a music stand? I hate having to break the spine just to use a book that was intended to be functional.

Re: Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection available

Prop it up on the chair in front of you, lie it on the kitchen table propped up against the sugar bag( or bowl if you're posh),learn the tune and put it away- until you want to learn the next one

Re: Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection available

yes I'm often tempted to tear all the pages out of some music books and put them in a binder, that's why I'm working on all my own transcriptions

Re: Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection available

I don't rely on books to learn or remember music.

But when I do use a print source to learn the ropes of a melody, I'd like to be able to use the book for its intended purpose without having to damage it. I can't say that all (or even most) printed collections make this a reality, especially hardcover editions.
