Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

Hi!

My name's Matt and I play Irish Flute in Orlando Fl......as you can imagine, there's not much in the way of Irish music here.

I'm looking to see if there's any other players out there with a similar problem, and maybe we could play together using skype. I'm looking for someone thats well past the basics though, and is a strong solid player that is totally comfortable with their instrument and can play a reasonable amount of tunes. Thanks a bunch!

Matt

Why don't you check out James Kelly? He should be advanced enough for you !

There are some Floridians on the board. I don't know where in FL SWFL Fiddler is but if he is not near you, he may know who is. I am sure he will chime in soon.

Does it matter where they are? JUnless you ultimately plan to meet up of course.

Re: Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

I know a very good flute player living in Gainesville, which is not too far away. Also I do believe there are some players in the Orlando area. There used to be a session in the Claddagh pub if I remember correctly. If you want to contact the flute player in Gainesville send me a PM with your email and I will foward it on to him.

Hi Matt! We're down the Gulf side from you, Punta Gorda/Fort Myers area. I have friends who make it up to the Claddah Pub session in Orlando, I know that's still going on. The Four Green Fields pub in Tampa is just monthly now, first Sunday. We have a weekly one with plenty of good players stopping by from Miami to Tampa and all parts in between, but it's in Punta Gorda. More info on local sessions in my bio if you click on my user name there.

Re: Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

We have a small but steady session in Savannah...but that's about 4(ish) hours from Orlando. But let us know if you're ever up our way!

Re: Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

Hi Matt! I have met you at the Orlando sessions - there are no sessions up here in St Augustine, so I know what you are going through. If all the Florida players lived closer to each other, we could have quite a session...

A friend took some lessons on Skype, andf he said it wasn't good sometimes, so I don't know how it would work for tune playing...so please post if you try it and how it worked...

Re: Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

Stop whining, Floridians. Session players from Rhode Island routinely have to drive most of the way, if not all the way, across the state to attend sessions. Sometimes we even drive to other states!! So get in the car and go. ;-)

Re: Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

I'm really looking for sessions per se. I'm looking for someone I can trade musical idea's with who I can throw variations at, and for that same person to do the same to me, so we can interact in our playing together.

Thanks for the sessions though! I attend the Claddagh cottage session just about every time there is one. I'll check out some of the other places you've suggested though.

*not looking for sessions per se

Re: Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

But then, going to sessions is a good way to meet people who share your interest in Irish music. If you make an effort to get acquainted with players in your general area (it might require some road trips), you just might find a good collaborator/teacher "through the grapevine." You know--the old Six Degrees of Separation theory.

Re: Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

Alas there is still a delay (latency) on the internet that will make it relatively impossible to play an "online" session using Skype. You will always hear a delay with the other instruments and no one will be in sync. I think maybe in 10-15 years, when everyone is linked with optical fiber, it *might* be possible, but we're a long way from there!

A lot of people who live in places overrun with traditional musicians don't have that privilege outside of sessions. Your best bet for finding musos who *might* be interested in trading musical ideas is to attend sessions and find out who is there.

Re: Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

Interesting. I actually consider that one of the main purposes of a session, chucking variations around and having them thrown back at me!

...but then again, I'm here in the nize cozy country where we get a maximum of 10-15 musicians. I've seen those 40 musician mobs in Tampa, you poor big city folks. ;-)

Re: Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

I agree, SWFL. To be fair, most of the folks I know who spend lots of time doing this outside sessions are either doing it in a house session (same principle as a pub session, really) or are in a band. A few lucky musos I know date someone else who plays and they frequently throw tunes about in the kitchen or living room. Ahhhh.... the romance!

Maybe Matt was just writing a very cleverly worded singles ad. ;)

Re: Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

Well, fair play to him then, right? I'd be a little more specific myself, especially about gender, but, you know, to each their own, by all means.

No no, you're right ss. You can really put tunes together in the kitchen with friends. That's good to do regularly. Good for your musical digestion.

Re: Looking for players on the advanced side to practice with

haha nice. I don't think there's much in the way of young chicks playing irish music around here ;) .

Anyway,

Kevin Crawford recommended trying skype out...he uses it to play with a few people.....I thought there would be a delay as well but he said it works fine. Strange.....

SWFL Fiddler, where do you play in sessions? If I get some free time off school I'll see if I can head down your way.

Thanks guys!
