Plenty of very old tunes & it is difficult to track all of them down. Some of these composers, though, are still living so I don't think the information is lost for those tunes. Misplaced, forgotten, wrongly credited . . . just hoping members give us the best information available.
Not really assuming all sources are known. I did not know of all these composers this morning.
;)
Tunes aren't typically published with a by-line. Aside from liner notes and picking fellow trad players' brains, I can't think of how you would even begin to research the composer of a tune.
In any case, there doesn't seem to be strong tradition of tune composers taking ownership of tunes and demanding credit, as far as I can tell.
Of the people on that list I know, not one of them would be particullarly bothered if they weren't credited for the tunes on this site. And there's a number of other tunes here that are not credited that I know the origin of, but won't say. And I know of at least one occasion where a composer specifically asked Jeremy to remove one of their tunes.
Playing a tune it does not matter who wrote it ~ if anyone.
Fact is, all of you talk about other musicians (the good, bad & the ugly). Remaining silent only perpetuates misinformation.
I am not saying all tunes *must* have all the information available. Just wanting to pay homage to people who have contributed to the tradition. They happen to have names.
It is possible to show respect without having to colour how we hear or play a tune. Why get on the high horse of humility?
Surely the names of most of the people who are on that list are well known to people who play tunes. I know them from reading liner notes, and listening when a performer says ' I learned this tune from the playing of...' (rather than coming here and making snide comments like "huh that means they learnt it from a CD").
And from the comments in the tune section here
.
I don't know how my name , or namesake, got on your list Random Notes. A search doesn't find it (except on your opening post) , and I certainly haven't submitted any of my own tunes
An original tune had to originate somewhere. So - all original, partly original, partly derivative, all derivative... something makes us like them enough to play 'em, over and over, and each of us is imparting an "original" element as we play.
Isn’t every tune an original composition? At least originally? And all the mutations, mutilations and permutations are the work of generations of musicians. It’s a good bet that if we know the composer, the tune just hasn’t been around long enough.
*cringe*
well, Aidan didn't post it anyway but it was nice of him to mention it
I wonder though, if people complaining about the rubbish in the tunes section understand how a searchable database works.
Assuming they don't have a fundamental objection to tunes being submitted at all.
whatever's wrong with this website is a consequence of its own success. If it wasn't so good, it wouldn't be so popular. Many sites with similar intentions have tried and failed in the past.
Overall it's a positive thing I reckon.
Your secret is safe with the 50 - 60,000 people here. ;)
Funny thing is I saw Danny's post a couple of years back & wondered then who the mystery composer was.
Cheers!

That may be a false assumption in this case, Bren.
