I presume the fleadh is heavily dependent upon financial assistance from the chosen town. Given the parlous state of Ireland's finances, there may be very few towns willing to provide a subsidy.
Why would Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann be dependent upon financial assistance from the chosen town. Mostly what they need is just a few venues - schools and halls. Might need help in terms of local volunteers but sure don't they collect entry fees to events and look at the massive business it Brings to the chosen town - accommodation, food & drink consumed. It's a moneyspinner for Gods sake. All they want is a bit of political patronage preferably from a certain direction..
it does totally depend on the financial assistance from the chosen town. Offaly board had to raise over 600k euro to stage it in Tullamore, and that's quite difficult as you can imagine.... having to tap local businesses to raise that kinda money 3yrs in a row.
From what I hear -Tullamore is deffo out for next year. Ballina or Cavan, as already mentioned above, seem to be the favourites.
Come off it, what's the 600,000 yoyos used for? Either Comhaltas is making a tidy profit on it and/or they are completely profligate with money. It can't seriously cost 600K to hire a few rooms and pay expenses for a few judges (who should be doing it for the love of it), can it ... can it...
i know - i was amazed at the amount of money they had to raise. Some people had voted against staging it for the 3rd year because of the difficulty of raising so much money a 3rd time.
Couldn't believe it myself...I mean, 600k....jeez that's some amount of money alright! It's true though!
Fleadh judges life insurance doesnt buy itself. Going by the particularly poor performance of the 2008 Ulster Fleadh castlewellan , by sum fella from Clare, they might need snipers on the roof if hes givin a second outing.
Maybe the 600k going in persuading the yanks not to come over and compete. The leprachauns can get a minutes peace and the Tir Na Nog redidents comission have written several strongly worded letters. Yanks out
How much do people think the fleadh costs?? 600k is not a lot of money...things dont come for free. If you take into account that it costs about 15k to rent the gig rigs for the weekend, all of the adjudicators and tutors are put up in hotel accommodation for the entire week of the fleadh, they also have to be fed, as do the many volunteers. The administration costs involved are huge...not to mention the cost of insuring all of the venues and activities on the street...Wouldn't have much change out of 600k after all that
Our branch hosted the fleadh in Clonmel, which admittedly wasn't on the same scale as Tullamore, but this 600k is nonsence and comhaltas doesn't give money to host branch for three years
just back from our session - aparently 750k is the magic figure this year!
As ondflute said, there's all the tutors etc to be fed+watered for the week....all the extra Gardai have to be paid (lots of overtime there for them, and they ain't cheap!). 15k for each gig-rig, and then the insurance must be huge too.
What's a gig rig in Tullamore - around here it's the trailer of an artic. lorry, covered on three sides with a bit of canvas: 15,000 Euro for that for a weekend?! Celtic Tiger Rip Off Ireland is obviously alive and well and knows the right people to touch for a few bob! Sure, they don't even have to move the bleedin trailer - just tow it into place. Someone's pulling your leg, methinks.
the wounded hussar said "What's a gig rig in Tullamore - around here it's the trailer of an artic. lorry" An artic trailer is for transporting goods and animals. Musicians deserve the proper facilities afforded by a purpose designed mobile stage, with proper sound and lighting, and professional operators. Just because there's a recession doesn't mean we have to revert to sackcloth and misery.
Well, you have a point - there's gig rigs and there are Gig Rigs. The latter probably cost a few bob alright. But whatever happened to the 'dancing at the crossroads' ethos?
"Fleadh judges life insurance doesnt buy itself. Going by the particularly poor performance of the 2008 Ulster Fleadh castlewellan , by sum fella from Clare, they might need snipers on the roof if hes givin a second outing. "
Truckers have to agree some very dodgy judging from the Clare man as well as the other guy from Cork who did the junior bands.
AS for bringing it north good idea Belfast would suit just had the tall ships complete success.
Cavan I think , But I cant see the clever people from cavan getting ripped off, if their not getting good value for 600k Im sure they will pass it onto mayo.

Cavan to Host All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil 2010
September 12, 2009
Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann has awarded Cavan Town the prestigious honour of hosting Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann 2010. Cavan is celebrating the announcement following a meeting at Comhaltas headquarters in Monkstown, Dublin on September 12, at which the Ardchomhairle voted to stage Ireland’s premier traditional culture event in the Lake County.
The Director General of Comhaltas, Senator Labhrás Ó Murchú, said that Tullamore, who has hosted the event for the past three years, has set the bar very high for future venues. “Their innovation, dedication, professionalism, hospitality and attention to detail were inspiring. They have placed our cultural traditions on a pedestal and have raised the morale of the hundreds of thousands of people who attended the Fleadhanna for the last three years”.
Senator Ó Murchú said that a very significant thing about the Fleadh was the effective partnership which exists between Comhaltas, Local Authorities and other public agencies, Gardaí, sponsors, local media, the business community, venue proprietors and the general public. He is positive that Cavan, which has a long tradition and heritage of Irish music and culture, will seamlessly take up the gauntlet and continue on this trend very admirably.
Although Cavan has not hosted an All Ireland Fleadh in recent times, it was one of the first venues to stage the big event. In 1954, Cavan hosted the fourth Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann during the formative years of the Comhaltas movement.
The Fleadh which is now an 8 day event will officially open on Sunday August 15 until Sunday August 22 incorporating the Scoil Éigse (the Comhaltas Summer school) running for the full week before the event and Seachtain na hÉigse. The Fleadh will include competitions, events and concerts such as the awarding of the Fleadh Ard Olamh, the overseas concert and the excitement of the All Ireland Senior Ceili Band competition.
Speaking after the announcement, the County Arts Officer, Catriona O’Reilly said the Fleadh will greatly enrich the cultural life of the entire region. County Manager Jack Keyes added that the event will be a unique opportunity for Cavan to showcase its talents as well as bringing a welcome boost to the local economy during these difficult times. According to one of the Fleadh organisers, renowned Cavan musician Martin Donohoe, the All-Ireland Fleadh is Ireland’s largest festival of music, song and dance and 2010 in Cavan promises to attract over 200,000 visitors and 11,000 musicians from all over the world. The fleadh competitions alone attracting over 4,000 competitors annually from all over Ireland, Britain, Europe, USA and as far away as the Tokyo branch.
The All Ireland Fleadh which plays host to hundreds of sessions will confirm Cavan’s place at the heart of Ireland’s living tradition.

I'd love to see it in Cavan. As it happens I remember when it was in Cavan in 1954 and I watched Kieran Kelly win the box competition.
