Yuck!

Yuck!

A neighbour was telling me of a traditional accordion player she saw performing at a Pussycat Dolls concert in Killarney recently. I was trying to get a mental picture of playing the box at such a gig, but somehow playing The Geese in the Bog for a crowd of mini skirted teenagers didn't seem to work for me. I looked up the said box player. .....Ah! Now I know where I went wrong...I should have played Amazing Grace over my head, and at the same time have a voice-over telling the world just how wonderful I am.....Is this yuck and cringe worthy or is it me?

Re: Yuck!

what an idiot! How degrading for the accordion. It's fools like this give traditional music a bad name. The poor people that had to endure that show must need counseling!

I'm assuming this is the same guy?

Re: Yuck!

Anyone who plays that bl**dy tune (upside down, or otherwise) is just selling their soul, as far as I'm concerned.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the likes of this tune (or for that matter, Danny Boy, Wild Rover, Ashokan Farewell etc.,) the public just seem to lap it up ...

Thinks .... can anyone out there play a flute, when held above their head?

Re: Yuck!

What happens when you sell your soul to the devil...

The same bloke, worlds apart.

And the sad thing is, the number of hits on each clip... :-(

Re: Yuck!

wonder which gig paid more, the lure of the filthy lucre usually wins out. I can play the harmonica behind my back, well, after a good feed of onions and beans, at any rate!

Re: Yuck!

Fair play to him for being able to keep a straight face throughout - that's quality acting.

Re: Yuck!

can anyone out there play a flute, when held above their head?, I can play it behind my head with my feet.

I agree with- the sad thing is, the number of hits on each clip...

Re: Yuck!

Yuck indeed.

Judging by the clips on his website he is a fine box player (though there are plenty of others I prefer) who is trying to do a bit of the Celtic doodah to make a living. I might get me a leather jacket. I am afraid the ladies won't look on me quite so kindly as on Liam, but it's worth a try.

As for Danny Boy, Wild Rover, Ashokan Farewell, etc. They are all deceptively simple tunes that are too often over-embellished or played weekly by mediocre players. As one who aspires to mediocrity (perhaps on the way to something better) I have learned to play less familiar stuff that seems to tolerate mishandling better!

Happened to hear Noel Hill last week at a house concert. Someone asked him for the Derry Air and he gave a lovely understated reading of it. There's life in the old dog yet! (I am referring to the tune!)

Re: Yuck!

Liberace? He was no Horowitz. Brad Pitt? He's no Lawrence Olivier. Obama? He's no Lincoln. But people love shiny p e r f o r m e r s . A good half of the adult population is made up of delight addicts.

So hats off to you, Liam O'Connor, for the sheer huevos. P.T. Barnum would've signed you like that!—

Re: Yuck!

Great clip, Trucks.

The only bit I didn't understand was where Tony's glass is still full. I reckon he must've had a coupla empties stashed away somewhere. :-)

I opened that clip only because I saw something about miniskirted teenagers in your description. I am very disappointed.

Its great to hear Noel Hill is back playing.

Re: Yuck!

The voice over is epic. Sounds like an old K-Tel Records commercial from the 70s. "All his greatest hits on two 8 tracks or one long play audio cassette!"

# Posted on August 13th 2009 by SWFL Fiddler

Re: Yuck!

I'm doing a training course today so the volume is muted on my PC. When you watch the first clip he looks like he is either going to sacrifice the box or throw it at someone.
He does look like a right knob but I suppose he doesn't care if he's making a few quid and getting off with ladies who have moved on from Daniel O Donnell

Re: Yuck!

My thoughts exactly buttonbox, tucked away in a corner of this discussion the good news about Noel was.
