I was just wondering where everyone gets their info on new cds being produced by trad musos?
Mostly looking for examples of online mags/rss feeds/message boards(I already know about this one) and other music websites that I might be missing. It would be helpful if the websites also posted a review of the cd... but not always necessary.
I've been downloading most of my music through Itunes recently (mostly because I like to pay for the albums) But there is no info on trad musos... and the indexing system is soo shocking that it's almost now worth seaching for anyone unless it's by name. (and even that doesn't work sometimes)
I mostly look out for fiddle players... but listen to anything that's Irish & Scottish. Most of the music I have is on suggestions from friends.
For Scottish music it may be worth signing up to Footstompin's monthly newsletter. Within that is a list of albums released that month amongst other things.
Custy's Music Shop in Ennis has a listing of new/independent CDs. Also The Late Session radio show on RTE hosted by Aine Hensey, and the CIC website(www.cic.ie).
Like Bigyabby suggested, I usually browse the catalogues of online stores every so often to see what’s new. The Blue Heron Gift Shop and the Celtic Music Interpretative Centre (mostly Atlantic Canada recordings) are two of my favourites and are usually really good in stocking new CD’s. Being from Nova Scotia, I tend to gravitate towards the Cape Breton style ... I know you didn’t ask for it specifically, but since CB fiddling is close in style to Scottish I thought that you may enjoy some of those recordings as well.
I am old fashioned, I hear things I like on the radio, and hunt them down, first checking local stores, but more often than not, going to Amazon, as brick and mortar sources for CDs are dwindling fast. I hate to have to learn new a new skill, but it looks like I will have to learn how to handle this computer based tune stuff before I die, either that, or give up on new stuff and just keep listening to the old.
Thankfully for my pocketbook, there are only two radio programs per week in my area that play this stuff or I might hear more to tempt me!
A new one that I just got here in the USA from The Button Box is The Crossroads, with Mairtin O'Connor, Cathal Hayden, and Seamie O'Dowd. Highly recommended!
Philippe Varlet has very well-written and thoughtful reviews of Irish music CDs, as well as tune books and videos: http://celticgrooves.homestead.com/CGhome.html
You can't go wrong with a 5-star review from Philippe! Plus he makes it easy to get your hands on the harder-to-get imports that aren't on the big record labels.
Where do you get your info?

Re: Where do you get your info?
Skim through the catalogues of your favourite online sellers would be one way.

Tony, that Custy's website is great - http://www.custysmusic.com/ - love the videos by the artists who drop by and record something. Great fun!

Yeah, I also check Claddagh Records' website regularly. Harry Bradley and Michael Clarkson's flute duet album is out now: http://claddaghrecords.com/WWW/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=15&products_id=2887
