Need some good vibes sent our way

Need some good vibes sent our way

For those of you who know (and those of you who don't) our piper Dirk, who is an occasional visitor to the site, please send some good thoughts, vibes, prayers, meditations, whatever you care to, for him and his family.

Their new infant son, Glendon, stopped breathing yesterday, turning blue and scaring them, of course, to death. They managed to revive him before (the doctors think) any brain damage, but of course now they'll have to monitor him during all naps and such, as he is probably a good candidate for SIDS; the tests took place all yesterday and today and they can't find anything wrong.

Thanks, all.

Zina

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

Best wishes to Dirk and Dirk's little guy. I'm guessing he'll be fine -- it's in babies' nature to come up with ways of stressing us out.

Oh, you mean that's not my husband's job, Cuch? *grin*

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

We'll set our Montana prayer wheels spinning on the breeze...sending some fresh air Glendon's way. But I gotta agree with Cuch--the little bugger'll probably turn out to be a champion fluter, enough lung power to get a hard D out of the Eisenhower Tunnel....

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

I didn't mean to suggest babies have exclusive rights to that burden, Zina! Many hands make light work, and all that.

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

Babies, man, babies. The boys are always more trouble too, seriously. This here is the first test of many to come, I predict, & everyone will come out with flying colors. Tell Dirk I say hi & let me know if he needs anything apart from endless cases of Red Bull.

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

Good Lord, Em, what would I give Dirk Red Bull for, isn't he bad enough on endless amounts of caffeine!?! There've been days when I thought he was going to vibrate right off his chair out from under the pipes...no Red Bull for that boy! :)

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

Well normally you tell new parents to try to sleep when the baby sleeps, but doesn't look like that's gonna happen for a while--I know I wouldn't be able to!

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

Yeah -- haven't had a chance to really talk with him about it, but I'm sort of assuming they're going to have to go the monitor route, isn't that what people do these days with babies with breathing apnea or whatever it's called?

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

Hope things are on the up since you posted, Zina. Wee tiny new born weans are such tiny fragile wee things....but with an amazing innate propensity for survival. I don't know how me sitting cross-legged going 'ommmm' will make the slightest iota of difference. But best wishes

Laughter is the best medicine, Danny, and it makes *me* feel a lot better to think of you doing it, at the very least... hehehe

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

Hi Zina - know a couple that have used a monitor for their wee premature girl, and it worked out fine. Reckon that getting thru the first episode is the hardest - new stuff is always scary. Hope all goes well for them.

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

Ten years ago, when I was still making a living as a respiratory therapist, I pioneered the use of home infant apnea monitors in our town. We had great success with them. Once the parents are taught how to position and apply the electrodes (little sticky patches with a wire attached), and understand the difference between a machine alarm (wire came undone) and a human alarm (an actual apneic episode), they are very reliable, and I'm sure many strides have taken place in the hardware in the last ten years. Also, parents should know how to do mouth to mouth on the infant. It's really very easy, and much nicer than doing it to a drunk who just wrapped his car around a light pole. (I used to ride ambulance too.) All parents need to know how to de-choke a kid (Heimlich maneuver) and breath them in a pinch. This is easy knowledge that is tremendously valuable.
Best of luck, and don't worry, just educate yourself to take care of business in a pinch. Youngster will be OK.

Dirk, play your pipes to him and he'll try his damnedest to drown them out.

Best of luck.

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

Thanks Everyone!

We got a great little moitor yesterday, even though the doctor said we don't need one. Maybe Glendon didn't need one, but his parents sure did. This monitor had no electrodes, and rests under his matress. It blinks or clicks with every breath, like a metronome, and it hasn't missed a breath yet. It's made by Bebe Sounds, and this sort of thing didn't exist ten years ago.
Debbie and I slept really well last night.

Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers. I hope to play tunes with you all soon!

All The Best,

Dirk

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

Good lord, he said you didn't need one after baby Glendon turned blue?! I'd need one too, Dirk. That's pretty amazing technology there -- can't believe there's no electrodes and such. Talk to you tonight about it!

Re: Need some good vibes sent our way

I would have needed one too! I remember how nervous I was every night, watching my little sons breathing. It still seems amazing to me, that they're so hardy when so very tiny. Now my oldest is 14 (I have three growing boys), but I can still see him as that precious sleeping baby.

Glad you got your monitor. Not only will you sleep better, but in the unlikely event there's another occurrance, you'll be prepared to protect your son. If those things had existed ten years ago, I'd've had one too! (or three!)
