A heavenly week of music, craic , conversations and swimming with the Dolphin. The highlight for me was the Friday session in Moroneys in Mullach which went on until about 4am (and such good hosts they kept serving the whole time).
At one stage the whole place started "da-ing" along to the melody of one of the tunes and the musicians all stopped playing and looked around astounded. This went on for about 2 rounds of the tune, until they joined in again. My mind was blown on Saturday after it. It seemed the whole pub was on exactly the same wavelength - a magic moment!
Well the wheather was lovely then it turned bad for the weekend! wild wind and rain....
Great sessions great craic, what more could you ask for? ... 2 weeks .....
This year I lost my Willie viriginity... 'twas mighty craic indeed. Now 7a.m. seems like a sensible time to go to bed, and drinking Guinness seems to be a viable alternative to eating meals.
Did anyone else see that ruptured bodhrán discarded outside The Malbay the other night? I'm sure there must be a nice story behind that....
awh....tha willie clancy best week of my life so far....gr8 sessions....gr8 craic....gr8 ppl!!! Had loads of craic in da lesson wi john whynn!!! Gr8 flute player!!
Was a great week all round with some mighty tunes - that Friday night one in Moroney's not least.
It was a joy to play with so many great and welcoming musicians and to make a whole pile of new friends. I look forward to repeating the experience in the future.
And I might have been responsible for that bout of singing/lilting of Lucy Farr's - it seemed a good idea at the time.
Just back in off the 3am ferry. Had a fantastic week in Miltown. Was awesome meeting all you guys who post here and I ran into there (you know who you are). Looking forward to next year.
The feelings mutual, no cause SS and Cathy. I hope next year I wont be so busy and have time to spend the whole 10 days sessioning. I was annoyed I missed Allan MacDonald on the Saturday night, and all the rest of course.
Did you know that the longer your guy ropes are the better, in storm conditions they absorb the stress better.
I was driving around Spanish Point at about 4am on Saturday night and the tent carnage on the beach was impressive. There were swaths of flattened tents strewn about the place and it looked like there were lads with large sticks taking down the remaining tents. Classic.
Yes, I was lucky to have a nice sheltered corner and as I lived under canvas for at least 15 yrs I got a good suss on it .One of the worst thing in weather like that is the up-seep from the sodden ground. A serious gael force tent is worth the large sums of money they cost. Ok spend 25 and cross your fingers but 200 will get a tent that can last 15yrs if you look after it. The sun will degrade the fabric so always carry a thin blanket to stretch over it in the sunny days. This has the added bonus of creating a much cooler shady tent space. This thin blanket is also essential for really rainy nights Sometimes you get small drips. on wool they are no problem. on cotton or sleeping bags a small drip is bad news. When you spend extended times living rough its absolutely essential to maintain a secure dry bedspace. This may well turn out to be the only dry thing you can practically maintain . Without this you simply can not maintain that lifestyle. The biggest improvement you can make simply to a tent space is a rug or small carpet. Without a doubt this makes life a lot more comfortable in many ways.
tents are so hot here in summer you simply can't stay in them much after dawn, they become sauna baths otherwise.
Probably just sleep out, with a mozzie net would be fine.
Spanish Point and tents - arrrgh! Painful.
If you shade it with a blanket and have 2 doors , plus if the blanket is wet it will cool the tent as it drys, then you can sleep in recovering from the night before. We always called tents 'nylon nightmares' .
I had to go home on Friday so missed the worst of the rough weather. I was thinking about those still camping at Spanish Point as the rain lashed down here in West Cork. Mind you I camp in my van these days, sling a foam mattress in the back, rather than putting up a tent. I've had enough of getting soaked at festivals in the past.
My tent was fine at Lahiffs up until the last night, the Saturday, when the wind snapped one of the tent poles. First week of use too. The rest of the tent is fine though and I can get the pole repaired for about £5 so no real damage done. I didn't notice the damage until the morning. It certainly did not affect my sleep. I saw some tents that looked the worse for wear over the week but mine was fine. I wouldn't like to have been down at the beach!
Thanks for the tips Ionannas. I will bear them in mind for the future.
Aye, the craic was endless (until the week ended) and the opportunities to catch wicked sessions were bountiful...Physically, I'm quite sore from squeezing into too many uncomfortable positions to play, but Willie was quite good to me overall...I am a virgin of the Willie no more...
Craic was grand. Yes - I was in the back of Moroney's too on the Friday night. BTW Alasdair - your style of playing worked well with the two boxes & concertina. My gentler style wouldn't have worked in that setting.

I met skooter500 and lived with TheSilverSpear and LowWhistler (lived is a loose term as we were all out a lot of the time and hardly saw each other!). Plenty of sessions and early mornings (from the night end, no I did not get up early). Did anyone see Franc, a French flute player? I see him every year but missed each other this time. I used to have a doppelganger but we must have now got different hair colour/styles. People would say they had just seen me playing in some bar I hadn't been! If I knew she was a brill player I could have said that I was.

Re: Willie Clancy week
forgive me scooter but whats da-ing? If its a typo for dancing then why did the musicians stop playing when everyone started da-ing/dancing?

Re: Willie Clancy week
Da da da.... singing the melody using da. The tune was Lucy Farr's Barndance. Turns out the musicians were the fools that started the whole thing.

Re: Willie Clancy week
"tents" and "Spanish Point" - a contradiction in terms if ever there was one. Obviously the people had p*sd off, and left the flattened tents. LOL.
Good to see you up bright and early, btw, ready for the first session of the day! Very good.
