Catskills/East Durham week july 12-18

Catskills/East Durham week july 12-18

Any of you going to the festival? I heard they had money problems this year, will this affect anything during the week? I wonder if attendance will be much lower because of the recession. I also heard a pub or two closed down since last year. Anyway, I'll be there with my bald head and over qualified concertina.

Is this your first time? Where are you coming from?

I'm just squeaking in at the last minute. Hope it's fantastic. Still trying to decide between one class and two. Two appeals, but my wee little brain can only absorb so much. Maybe I'll take one fiddle and one jewelry class, Iris!

I'll be there. Taking Edel Fox's morning class and taking the afternoons off to practice.

Re: Catskills/East Durham week july 12-18

I'm thinking about making the treck up from NYC. I won't be able to take too much time off work, if any, so I won't be doing any classes.

What's the scene for just strolling around with your instrument? Are there situations where you'd likely find some people who are sharing tunes outside of the class structure?

I did note on the website that there's performances in the evenings, but I was thinking about more interactive events.

You will have plenty of informal (and more formal) sessions, believe me. There's a session in most pubs in town every day and night, and there are many pubs... the challenge is to find a session that suits your taste, my friends and I are planning on having a few "house" sessions in our cabin, keeps the annoying elements out :-)

Re: Catskills/East Durham week july 12-18

All festivals struggle with finances these days and despite the huge recession the CIAW has laid on a powerful staff once again for the classes and concerts and the sessions. People do have to understand and appreciate that the concerts actually bring in revenue for the CIAW while the free sessions afterwards don't so it would be very helpful to the organizers to see as many people attend the public events like the afternoon lectures, the nightly concerts and dances where donations can be made. Grants only cover very little really and the students certainly pay their share already so it's time for the pub punters to do the same.

I'll be there taking Brian Conway's morning class.

I'm also bringing a handful of nice fiddles and a dozen fine bows for sale from Johnson String Instrument to pass around and put on trial.

Re: Catskills/East Durham week july 12-18

Martin, you will love it, and I am sure you will find the burgers too!

And A Sheamuis, the evening concerts are great, and they do not preclude you playing in the sessions. In fact the sessions, the officially scheduled ones around town, take place AFTER the concerts every night. So you can do both. It's truly worth the very reasonable admission price to be able to sit and enjoy some of the finest musicians, some quite legendary players too, from both the US and Ireland.

The concerts at night and all day Saturday, are really such a big part of the whole experience, you'll really enjoy them if you attend. Most session players are there anyway, the playing fun really gets cooking bigtime afterwards!
