Weird percussion by the "Larry Adler trumpet "operator...

Weird percussion by the "Larry Adler trumpet "operator...

The other evening (when there was a regrettable outbreak of vile short trouser wearing) there was a chromatic harmonica player who I've never seen before tootling away. During one set he bashed his Hohner Chrometta loudly and enthusiastically on the table; loosely in time with the music. I mean he really bashed the gob iron down loudly indeed, a bigger noise than all the feet tapping or coins on the bar. As I looked around there were many a raised eyebrow (not just me).
Now as it happens I have rarely run into tin sandwich players at a session (which in my opinion is a good thing judging by the appallingly dreadful racket they all seem to make at BLooZ jams).
Is this percussive technique what they do?
Is it traditional?

I have played with a few of the harmonica playing type(the entire pseudo-folk scene in states) and have yet to see them slam their instrument about. I have witnessed a tin whistler pick up a bodhran and proceed to "play" the poor drum with their poor tin whistle.

What do you play, yhaalhouse? Remind me to run into you in a session some time so that I can annoy the arse off you, just by playing tunes.

I know and play with a chromatic harmonic player who plays Trad
tunes better than most session players. Also Scottish, ragtime
and a few other genres.

Lotsa good harmonica players in all kinds of music! But, unfortunately, harmonica is one of those intruments that people believe easy to play. They can pick it up, blow in it and low and behold they can 'play' it. IN OUT IN OUT IN OUT. It's not the instuments fault -it's the players.

Yeah, there's bad players of any instrument. Just be grateful it wasn't an ukulele...the only thing those are good for at an Irish session is kindling.

The knack is to play Irish music first and the harmonica second. There are a good few harmonica players around who make the mistake of thinking that it's the harmonica that's the point of the thing.
