About a month ago, I bought a set of Huayin "perlon" violin strings on Ebay for $8.88 US, from somebody whose Ebay name is 53217 (over 11,000 transactions). No, the E wasn't wound, but they've held up nicely for a couple of months, and I don't believe my sound is any more execrable than usual. Seldom do I find anything as cheap as I am, and my obscenely generous nature compels me to share. There yeh have it.

I bought a dozen sets (same make, different seller) for putting on student rental fiddles. The first four sets I put on all came back within six weeks with the A (and sometimes the D) unwound.
What do ya reckon, skreetch... bad batch or bad product? I'm only two months in, and no problems so far. I was replacing some old Dominants that had the A fray... particularly nice for sliding to notes (if you feel that you need some extra scar tissue).
Don't think it is a batch - I bought a mix of 3/4 an 4/4 sized strings, and they are all the same. The winding seems to be too loose on the core.
BTW The <£10 strings I'm currently giving out are called 'Adagio' (also from China via Ebay) - they are steel cored but sound quite reasonable, and they also seem to last OK.
If you have a good fiddle, you can throw anything on it and it sounds
good. A cheap fiddle, though needs really good, powerful strings
to get the thing vibrating.
You may just be right about that Hup. I figured that it wasn't worth it to put good strings on my cheapie fiddle, so I was using helicore--which are not cheap, but middle grade. Out of curiousity I tried some really good strings and what a difference it makes! Still sounds crappy but much better.
Four months after first posting: The A string is unstable and hasn't held held a secure pitch for several weeks. I suppose one really does get what they pay for. Current rating - thumbs down.

I have found the A to unwind after a short period on some sets of full price Dominants from Ebay.
