Re: I haven't seen one of these at a session... yet.

I knew a vibraphonist, in my college days, who was very good at playing "The Shadow of Your Smile" in the dorm cafeteria. On drinking glasses.

Wow! Its fabulous ... brightened up a dreary Sunday afternoon. The preparation before the performance must be humungous, tuning all the glasses just right. Very clever.

Re: I haven't seen one of these at a session... yet.

I could definitely see a pub drunk developing this into an act and joining a session with glasses of Guinness. The problem would be stopping him from ruining the act by drinking the Guinness.

Re: I haven't seen one of these at a session... yet.

I had a friend that played it as given above, including th Hungarian Dances, but I remember something about the famous American Benjamin Franklin inventing a different take on it, like here ~

She even mentions him as the inventor, 1761. Don't listen to too much of this as it is said to make people go mad. Well, on second thought, it won't make much difference here. ;-)

Now to escape to the countryside for a spell... I don't quite know how to represent a tarzan call with Arabic letters. That's another case of words and letters being unable to really convey the truth of the sound or the feeling ~ AAAaaaAAAaaaAAAaaaAAA!!! (440)

Enjoyed watching both videos, thanks! I'm inspired to build something with beer bottles to blow on. Yummy!

Glass harp.

There have been compositions for the instrument, actually.

Crisp ornamentation would be a challenge.

Re: I haven't seen one of these at a session... yet.

Weirdly enough, I was listening to recordings of a glass harp on Friday night after the session. Except this was a series of plates half submerged in water - invented by Benjamin Franklin I think the CD said...

The glass harp came earlier.

This is a glass act. Should we drink to it?

Re: I haven't seen one of these at a session... yet.

Mozart wrote an Adagio (K617a) for this instrument and appears to have been genuinely fond of it!

it's not quite Mozart, but a lot of bottles as The Melbourne Symphony orchestra, conducted by Cezary Skubiszewski, play the Victoria Bitter beer commercial theme song on VB stubbies

I enjoyed the related solo of the Moldau. Amazing. Right on the cutting edge of innovation. Redefines (potentially) playing "sharp".

Re: I haven't seen one of these at a session... yet.

"Redefines (potentially) playing 'sharp' "
Should that be said in a knife-edged and cutting tone of voice?

"I haven't seen one of these at a session... yet."

I've seen loads of them at sessions, just not utilised in that way.

And I thought my instrument was hard to tune and lug around...

Re: I haven't seen one of these at a session... yet.

My instrument may be difficult to carry because it weighs thirty pounds and has to be plugged in but at least it stays in tune.
Yes, I have played music with hammer dulcimer players and have noticed how much trouble it can be to tune a hammer dulcimer.

It stems from a smooth and glassy source, Tony O'Rourke.
