Usually they show up at the session. They sit next to the lugs tuning their banjos, and take up space all night, but at least they don't play so much...
These are the tuning lugs used with a hex wrench. If you want to use this type of lug, I would recommend getting one of Brenden White's special hex wrenches shaped like a "T" with a wooden handle, as they are much easier to use.
If you want the new type of finger tuners that do not require a wrench, contact a bodhran maker. For example, Darius Bartlett (France):
Try contacting Albert Alfonso. He's a great maker and is right in Texas. Actually he usually tours around during the Summer months performing, conducting workshops, and selling his wares at festivals. If I were you I'd look for the thumb screws rather then having to carry a hex or Allen wrench.
All the best!
Peace,
Ed
p.s. these yokes are really not "tunable" but the head tension can be "adjustable" through mechanical means.
get "double ball catches" from a furniture hardware cattledog,
knock out the balls, drill and tap, insert screw, instal and suddenly become world famous bodhran maker.
Lugs tuning bodhrans? What's the world coming to.....!!
I like McKnowall's idea that you drill through the balls, use the existing holes and you get a Viola. A very tunable instrument that needs very little drilling.

Re: Bodhran tuning lugs
You could try your local hardware store.
There are numerous designs of tuning systems for the different makers. You could always phone or email the makers and ask where they get theirs from.

Re: Bodhran tuning lugs
Don't most of them just use standard Allen wrenches?

eBay (USA)

The company name is Andreas

In America Hex Wrenches are sometimes referred to as Allen Wrenches, which refers to one of the original companies that made these wrenches.

I have only ever heard them called Allen keys

Re: Bodhran tuning lugs
Sorry to send the discussion off course with an 'Americanism." But then again, what would a bodhran thread be without diversions?

Re: Bodhran tuning lugs
McKnowall, where do you drill and tap ?
Don't see how that makes a tuneable bodhran lug, not at all.
# Posted on May 20th 2009 by Guernsey Pete
Re: Bodhran tuning lugs
Easy pete, you drill and tap through the two balls (or where they were), use existing mounting holes and viola!
