Comhaltas do the tradition a dis-service in this regard .. Is the rule the same for group performance? there was a disgraceful outing for a Comhaltas Judge, from Clare I believe, who during the Fleadh in Castlewellan handed out a politically motivated ajudication to the Mc Peake Group. Unhealthy to subject young talented musicians to such arbitrary musical bigotry. I have a recording of the performance and although distracted by work , always meant to send a copy to Ronan Browne or another couple of people, just for a second opinion. Even the group who won, who were also fantastic, agreed Mc Peakes shud have taken it..I am aware of the bad blood that exists but it just go against the ethos of participation and excellence that Comhaltas otherwise stands for.. if anyone would like the recording PM me and I will be most happy to send it to you. Anyone who knows the name of the Judge, please remind me, with any luck he can be avoided at future events.
just on a point..all the instruments playing melody did so, varying only ornamentation and phrasing..The only non traditional thing about the performance was the Double Bass, which if was an issue, shouldn't have been allowed in the first place..I wonder if I can somehow post the recording on you tube, without losing sound quality..
A well worked out arrangement inlcuding such things as harmonies would be expected in the grupa ceol but not in the duet, trio ceili band etc (if there are any etcs that is :_) competitions.

Re: Harmonies in fleadh
They usually have a few heads stuck on spikes above the entrance to the town where the fleadh is being held.
Those heads serve as a warning to anyone foolish enough to even say the word "harmonies" in relation to fleadh competitions.
