Northumbrian Smallpipes for sale - $700.00

Northumbrian Smallpipes for sale - $700.00

I am selling a set of Northumbrian pipes by D.G. Burleigh. The Pipes were delivered, new, in June of 2005. They are a seven-keyed chanter, with complex drones (two tuning beads on the "G" drone, one tuning bead on the other three drones), pitched in "F".

The pipes have been well maintained. The D,G, and d drones have composite reeds (Brass bodies, plastic tongues). The "g" drone has a cane reed. There is selection of cane drone reeds with the pipes. The chanter reed is in good working order, and there is a back-up reed made by Colin Ross. The pipe case provided by the maker is included.

I am also including a copy of John Liestman's book, which is invaluable for the clarity of its instructions in reed making, and general pipe maintenance. It also has numerous tips on playing technique which, if you're not a genious, and I am not, would go undiscovered without such hints as the book gives.

I paid $1,200.00, icluding shipping, for the pipes when new (the exchange rate was not so favorable for the dollar then). I am asking $700.00 for the pipes, which includes shipping.

Re: Northumbrian Smallpipes for sale - $700.00

I am planning on getting a Burleigh smallpipe set, but still having some doubts... My actual plan is picking up Uilleann pipes, but they are way out of budget :(

Why are you getting rid of yours? Is it a matter quality? Or just a personal choice to stop playing them?

I know you call yourself "not a genious", but any help is welcome for me to take a decision...

Cheers!
Tom

Re: Northumbrian Smallpipes for sale - $700.00

Tom,

I don't know if my reply, which was fairly in-depth, to your question went through, so here's an abreviated version. The reasons I'm selling the pipes are that, aftyer four years of diligent practice, I don't think I play them very well.

After 23 years of playing Highland and Scottish smallpipes, and 30 years of playing whistle, my fingers are pretty much used to an open, straight-fingered technique. The Northumbrians require playing with curved fingers, tightly pressed into a small area, and using the tips, rather than the pads. My fingers just never got used to that.

The other reason is I never really got the hang of making the reeds, even with the directions provided in Mr. Liestman's book. Scottish reeds, both Great pipes and smallpipes, are readily available.

My decision is definitely NOT influenced by the quality of the pipes. The pipes sound quite nice. The intonation is good, and the drones well balanced. The chanter has good volume, and will hold its own in a session. This chanter has also received numerous compliments for its "sweet tone". The tone is round, and oboe-like. On the rare occasion when my fingers behaved themselves, the pipes were a joy to play.

I hope this is of some help.

Re: Northumbrian Smallpipes for sale - $700.00

Hey,
thanks for your reply. Your first one doesn't seem to have come through...

You were very helpful, thanks for that. I know very little about Smallpipes, I just noticed that they look and sound very similar to Uilleann Pipes (which is the actual instrument I want to learn). As I understand the technique is quite different though...
So I think I'll probably opt to buy a basic uilleann set in stead of a "full set" of another kind.

What are Northumbrians ?- do you mean
Northumbrian Small Pipes?
NSP neither look like or sound like Uilleann pipes

Re: Northumbrian Smallpipes for sale - $700.00

They don't? I must have a completely wrong idea then...

I thought they both have a cilindrical chanter bore, closed at the end (on the U.P. by closing it off on your leg), closed or semi-closed fingering, 4 drones, ...
NSP's sound a bit more nasal, but they have the same colour as UP's, a sound that reminds me of baroque musette

ok, the smallpipe option is now definitely out... I'll start looking for a good practice UP set...

Re: Northumbrian Smallpipes for sale - $700.00

NSP are very much quieter and sweeter than Uilleann.
And the closed-hole chanter ( ALL holes except the one for the note required MUST be kept closed ) gives the potential for very crisp playing, as it can be staccato.
