Peterson iStroboSoft tuner now on the Apple app store...
I tested the $10 Peterson iStroboSoft iPhone app side by side with my $250 Peterson VSAM tuner and its essentially identical. The strobe displays move in sync, and in some ways the iPhone app is better since it shows the actual tuning offset, while the VSAM only has the moving strobe patterns. Its also a lot easier to read the iPhone bright display than the monochrome LCD strobe on the VSAM. The app also has a noise filter where it will sample the ambient noise and then use that to help isolate the instrument being tuned.
Incredible... Best tuner for the iPhone by far.
(looking forward to the inevitable cascade of snide comments from the usual suspects, but those of you with iPhones go get this app, I'm doing a little Snoopy dance!)

Dave, the peterson is a god send for tuning electronic instruments when its too noisy .For the fiddle it needs to be perfect fifths. you simply cant get any other tuner that will do this accurately , that I know of. . One good paying gig will cover the tuner and its such a blessing. ie it actually works!
I dont have an Iphone mind....my cheap old nokia does the job fine
Re: Peterson iStroboSoft tuner now on the Apple app store...
Well, it makes me wish I had an i-phone. I've used the ooolllddd Peterson strobo-tuners of the past, which weren't really portable as we know it nowadays. This sounds like a brilliant application at a great price. Now, unfortunately, I don't expect I can convince my wife of the need for me to upgrade to an i-phone...
Re: Peterson iStroboSoft tuner now on the Apple app store...
There are other strobe tuners around, including hand held, and there are some nice ones in the relatively inexpensive range, if not strobed. I'm sure yours does all you need it to Baz. However, it does help, some of the modern extras, like a strobe, which I particularly like, and being able to screen out noise in a pub full of confusion for the general tuner... I've a violin making friend who I gave my little cassette sized tuner to and that has worked a charm for him for years now... I think I purchased it back then for a tenner, or maybe £15...
I still like the idea of the multi-functional phone that will also do a job as a tuner, an attractive convenience...
Re: Peterson iStroboSoft tuner now on the Apple app store...
There are some tasks, like tuning concertina reeds or uilleann pipe regulators, where the accuracy and stability of a strobe tuner really make things much easier. While not a feature of the iPhone app, the Petersen VSAM tuner also supports setting alternative temperaments, in particular just intonation with a changeable scale root. This is invaluable for tuning, for example, a set of regulators on a set of pipes in C.
Re: Peterson iStroboSoft tuner now on the Apple app store...
I am not sure I understand what a strobe tuner is . I have heard of strobe linghting and the effects of but not of sound strobe effects . Is this the same effect two closely tuned strings have where the sound makes what I would call a beating effect? The closer they are together the slower the beats .
My worry about this app would be the quality of the microphone in my Iphone may be a limiting factor.

Re: Peterson iStroboSoft tuner now on the Apple app store...

John,
Most excellent report on the tuner.
These days I'm more of an embedded ARM guy...

Peterson's added an instrument cable adapter accessory for the iPhone/iPod touch:
