howdy all, wondering if u could help!i play the uilleann pipes and for 8 odd years i had a lovely reed!low and behold it has recently capsized beyond repair!now i have had several spares made but they'r either to loud and aggressive or totaly out of tune!would any1 know wher i cud get a nice reed made, not to loud but not quiet if ya no wat i mean, and in tune?
Hi needaliver.
I can sympathise with your predicament.
I think in the long run you should consider making your own.
I watched a mate of mine (that makes his own NSP reeds) make a reed and it is not basically that difficult. Uillean pipe reeds are made in a similar way, and there is quite a lot about reed making on the net.
I hope to start making my own GHB chanter reeds soon.
Needaliver - Benedict Koehler is considered to be a master of reed making. Some of the greatest uilleann pipers today use his reeds. He lives in E. Montpelier, Vermont USA. He's a wonderful pipe player and makes pipes with his partner David Quinn. If you would like his contact information, email me through the site. (click on JMH)
Benedict is a very warm and kind person and I'm sure he could help you. I just can't say enough good things about him. He's a treasure up here in Vermont!
it may not be hard to make a reed but its a totaly different story gettin it the rite tone and in tune!believe me iv tried and with half of chinas bamboo goin to waste i thought itd be better if i stopped,if only for the pandas sake! yeah tried gettin a reed of the maker but wasnt good at al!
Big difference in making GHB reeds and Uilleann pipe reeds!
Where are you based? Your best bet would be to get a reed maker near you, failing htat, you could contact Na Piobaire Uilleann and they should be able to give quite a substantial list of reedmakers!
Hope this helps,
Pol.

Re: need a good reed maker
Good Luck.
Seriously, who made your pipes?? That's the first source to try.

I didn't mean to minimize the difficulties involved, but in the end if you do persist you will end up better off.
