There is a file on Youtube of a young Tony MacMahon playing two tunes on a paolo that I am sure many here have watched. It seems to me that Tony is playing the first tune in C, and the second tune in Am on a B/C box. Do others here agree? Tony is known for playing a D/D# Paolo, so this is unusual. What are the 2 tunes he is playing in C and Am?
I think its My Love is in America in C minor and Caste Kelly in A minor. He plays My Love is in America in C#/D style but because its on a B/C box it comes out c m as opposed to d m. He plays Castle Kelly B/C style so it comes out in Am.
here are a couple of gems in the same vein, played by ned kelly of tipperary on a fabulous jade-green paolo tuned to a-flat...i think the world needs a solo cd from this gent:
hmmm....I just played along with Castle Kelly on my B/C Box and its the same notes as given here : http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/21
According to this its in A minor.
It beggars belief that there is so much disagreeement about such a simple question on a website that is supposed to be for musicians.
C and Am - what's the problem here?
[what's the problem here?].....well, in my case, if you're watching the clip in a setting where you don't have your instrument, as i was, tony's box is wet enough that the semitone between a & b-flat might be ambiguous to the ear....
re ned kelly: i had to laugh at the comment from box whiz damien mullane on the clip of reels, to the effect of, "i remember playing like this when i was a child".....a comhaltas search for an example of mr. mullane's allegedly un-childish playing reveals a style that is gaspingly impressive from a technique standpoint, but that from an expressive standpoint, to this subjective listener, sounds callow compared to the agelessly soulful style of players like ned kelly or mick mulcahy.....
i disagree with Mullane and CEEMONSTER. Kelly sounds modern-safe CCE style to me. Not like macMahon or Mulcahy in terms of style. Slower, safer and more careful. Thesildness of Cooley or the likes would be unsettling in CCE competitions and would probably be labeled as youthful, overexhuberent playing. This is not a criticisim just highlighting that there is a CCE style which has come about in modern times which is mislabled as playing the 'old stuff in its traditional style'. Some people love it, others don't. Mullane has got too much hassle on this site and remember its not easy to become as technically good as he has. He's also young and as you can hear from the Macmahon clip - ones playing can change an awful lot over the years. In fact i don't doubt if mullane could play like Kelly there should he choose to. Maybe not Macker or Mulcahy as easily. Doesn't matter a sh++e really i suppose.
[Mullane has got too much hassle on this site] really? i don't know anything about that......and when it comes to accordion, the only "cce style" i have discerned is the continuing orthodoxy of the b/c-paolo-playing-full-five-note-fiddle-rolls a la the late paddy o'brien or joe burke (rather than the post-sharon shannonesque pellet-gun staccato of mullane & contemps)....ned kelly is not playing in either of those styles. he seems to me to be playing & ornamenting in the old "on the row" style more associated with melodeon or older c#/d players. he is not "wild" like macmahon, but he is ornamenting like macmahon.......and that is a style i have never known to be rewarded by cce or the fleads.....the only c-live box clip i've seen in this ornamental style is another of my faves, the clip of colm regan of dublin, son of john regan. most of the other clips seem to feature five-note fiddle rolls or the moderne pellet-gun sound....
agreed, kelly does not have a "wild" sound, but there's more than one type of beauty that calls.....to me his sound is very soulful & timeless.....could listen to it forever, and that's speaking as someone whose fave box player is tony macmahon........and no one has said that that mullane could play this way technically if not emotionally....quite the contrary---after all, he himself has let the world know that it was his, er, outgrown childhood style....
sorry, i meant, no one has said that mullane could NOT play this way....
yeah....i think of that cleaner ornamental style as 'associated with" c#/d but not only played on c#/d or melodeon. my fave b/c box players' ornamental style is this cleaner style.....the younger paddy o'brien, or johnny mccarthy of ennis, or josephine marsh....i think colm regan is playing b/c, not 100% sure...
