Getting RTE in the UK

Getting RTE in the UK

I understand RTE have stopped broadcasting an analogue signal, which is what we used to be able to pick up here in the UK (just!). And I know some people can get RTE via their Virgin cable setup. However, I've just spoken to Virgin and they say that it is not available to the UK outside of N Ireland.

What is the way round this? My poor dad is really missing his programmes!

Re: Getting RTE in the UK

I was listening last night via my virgin cable telly?

I remember when I was a little kid, in manchester, my dad could only get a signal on the radio in his car. I remember many an evening sitting with him in the car listening to music. My mum binging us out tea and juice and samwiches and stuff.

The UK "has the worst copyright laws", so this RTE problem must be in with it somehow.

Re: Getting RTE in the UK

Yes, that makes it worse, knowing some people are able to get it on virgin cable, but that the official word from virgin is that they shouldn't be able to!

I think it could be a hangover from when Telewest and NTL had separate lives to Virgin.

And I know the internet is an option, but my dad can't use that.

Re: Getting RTE in the UK

Ha, dads eh. I pointed my dad to where he could get it on the net, but his computer is an ancient atari running windows 95. He can write letters on it and do sums though.

Re: Getting RTE in the UK

RTE radio is available via freesat. RTE TV is not.

Re: Getting RTE in the UK

I used to get it quite easily in Durham in the 70s, 80s. I think you had to be within a certain range to get it, though, in the UK.

Re: Getting RTE in the UK

Follow this link http://www.eire.fm and then click on
Eire FM-Irish Internet radio stations live, and wide selection of Irish and British on-line radio stations becomes available.

It won´t help triplet´s father as he doesn´t use internet, but it might be of interest to those who don´t already know it.

Re: Getting RTE in the UK

Are you asking about radio or TV? RTE Radio stopped broadcasting on medium wave last year, but the Long Wave frequency is still going.

Re: Getting RTE in the UK

If your dad has internet why not buy an internet radio and listen to loads of Irish Stations via internet there just like a normal radio no computer required just a internet connection

Re: Getting RTE in the UK

Yes, it's just the radio he's looking for, for now. He says it's in fact the 252 long wave frequency that has just disappeared, leaving no other analogue options.

Thanks for the 'internet radio' tip though! Never heard of those! Could the perfect solution.... Just ripped this off Wikipedia:

"Standalone consumer products target at users who do not want to be dependent on a computer (or computer knowledge) for their Internet radio listening. Most products include a dynamically updated stations list. There are variants of these devices with and without integrated speaker(s). The Streamit device offers dial-up capability. The Philips NP1100 comes also with the Rhapsody music subscription services, allowing you to enjoy all the collections provided by Rhapsody without a PC. The Grace Digital GDI-IR1000 which is Wi-Fi base includes the ability to listen to over 15,000 world wide radio stations as well as Pandora, a free personal radio solution provider without the need for a PC."
