I've just discovered this tune on youtube, and I'm totaly posseded by it (singing it again and again, I'm sure a lot of you know that!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfbMfM7BqTE
(i've just strated playinfg irish flute and want to play fiddle now!!!)
How would you classify this tune; a slow reel or something else?
Does anybody knows similar tunes played on fiddle wich bring him that kind of emotion?
Chris
Yes, file under very square, poorly played, out of tune slow reel. After all these years why don't they lock themselves in a room for five hours a day and learn to play their feckin instruments.
Link here for Jim Corr's interview on Matt Cooper a while back before, gives you an idea of the toll the Corrs music can take on a man, well worth a listen.
It sounds like a recently composed tune and, although it shows some of the influence of not traditional music, it is not really composed in the tradition and is thus not categorizable in terms of traditional tune types. The term 'slow reel' usually refers to a tune that is either a reel slowed down or a tune which would work as a reel if speeded up. The number of bars in this tune is right fo a reel, but the melodic structure and phrasing are not really.
The term 'air', although it also has a more specific meaning within Irish traditional music, can be used as a convenient catch-all for any tune which is not a dance tunes.
But why does it need to be classified, anyway? If you like the tune, listen to it, learn it and play it. It's not the kind of tune that many people are likely to join in on in most sessions, though.
There are a number of acts who exploit the "celtic music" theme without much seeming understanding of it.
Here we have another one.
Get out to a few more sessions and you'll know not to ask such questions in public......
What I found interesting is that there were no microphones visible in the video, which included some shots of the ceiling. Presumably the video was shot while they were "lip"-synching to a previously made studio recording.
I get a feeling of euphoria, a sense of well being, and I feel like I'm floating in space. But enough about these tablets that I'm taking...they are supposed to be for me 'water'. But back to the Corrs...now that is what I would call a nothing tune played in a white room. A touch of David Hockney without the Cat. (Strange..but I thought I heard a cat on there)
Very popular with the comment section on the UTube site though,.....maybe we are all musically ignorant????.
I would call it instrumental pop, very pleasant, and very pretty, but not the kind of stuff generally favored by those that hang around this site. I think Gary is right, they were doing the Milli Vanilli treatment for the music video, and just pretending to play for the camera.

Re: How would you classify this tune?
You're probably much better off playing with your flute when it comes to the Corrs. Fiddling with them would probably bring a similar emotion....

The only emotion I felt was a vague sensation of nausea...

Or a torture scene from 24 series 8, or 8 series 24, or something.

Re: How would you classify this tune?
I'd class it as commercial new agey 'celtic' stuff. Great to do the ironing by.
