According to today's Irish Daily Mail, Brendan Gleeson (he of Hollywood fame) presented an award to a young Navan Accordion player name of Connor McEvoy. Well I suppose we have to be thankful for small mercies, at least the Awards got a mention in the press. Now if only we could teach them how to tell the difference between an accordion and a fiddle.
Incidentally it was a good show if a little drawn out, with a few second takes here and there. The joys of making a prog' for TV. Have to say I enjoyed the fact that many of the older tunes were played on the night. The show goes out on Tg4 on Easter Sunday night 9.30. Look out for me in the middle about six rows back from the stage????????????
Ah, you were in the Opera House, Free Reed. We had thought about going but I must admit my grasp of the spoken Gaeilge is a little vague - i.e. normal school Irish. Then it was also €50 for a pair of tickets, grand for a normal concert, but to help them make a TV programme? Straightened times - must tighten the old belt etc. Glad you enjoyed it and we'll keep an eye out, that is, if the older daughter lets me anywhere near the TV on said night!
W.H. - I was only there because of the concessions for OAPs- €20. As for the Gaeilge - I lost it many years ago in 'The Holloway Road' so much of the speil went over my head too. Dathie O'Shea and his glamorous co presenter were very good - in and out of the english all the time. There was no break so at the end of the show the knuckle bone of me arse was playing up a bit, as indeed was the 'auld prostrate'!!!
Daithi O'Sé was a legend - he has went up in my estimations from a vaudiville bog-trotter to a true professional presenter and entertainer. He made a tv production into an entertaining concert with his wit and banter. The music was also excellent especially Mc G and Donnelly's stint with the other rock-stars. I have a great photo of Gleeson and Roger Sherlock playing at the bar at 3am.
