A few hours ago I received the sad news of the death, early this morning, of Michael Mahoney. Flute and whistle player, singer and overall stalwart of West Clare music.
This is very sad news and our sympathies go to Michael's family. Not only was he Chairman of the local Miltown Comhaltas but he's given a lifetime to promoting the music by teaching and encouraging young musicians down through the years. He was one of that rare breed of "well rounded musician" in that he was also a fine traditional singer and dancer. It was very fortunate that he was recorded on CD ("On Malbay's Shore") last year featuring both his music and singing and that this will be a fitting memento to this great man. He will be sadly missed from the Thursday night Blonde's sessions where he was a regular attender for the most of thirty years. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a Anam.
It seems not too long ago we played at presentation at the West Clare resource centre, Michael sang, Kitty Hayes and Ollie Conway danced as part of a half set. They're all gone now.
Last night the musicians were out in their numbers paying tribute to Michael Patsy Flanagan at the funeral home in Ennistymon.
For anyone who wants to pay their respects to Michael, funeral arrangements are as follows:-
Reposing at O’Friel’s funeral home Miltown Malbay this evening (Thursday) 6 - 8 pm.
Requiem Mass tomorrow (Friday) in St.Joseph’s Church , Miltown Malbay , at 11am, followed by burial in Freigh cemetery.
