I have actually received a text across a session table before a few years back. I think it said something along the lines of "who is this arse sitting next to me?" or somesuch.
Tying this in with other threads perhaps instead of shouting keys to the guitarists only for them to mishear "D" and "G" maybe it would be better just to text. Think of the extra info you could convey in terms of identifying the mode and even providing chord charts. Perfect solution!
It might be better if it activated a controlled explosion in the vile gewgaw, permanently affecting the culprit's capacity to use it with the ear, hand, mouth or any other body part in close contact with it at the time.
I do not like mobile phones, as you may have guessed. In addition to being insufferable, they are devastating the Congo and tracking your every move.
Nicholas, by "mobile phones", do you mean what are also called "cell phones"?
I don't like them because it feels like wearing an electronic collar and leash to me.
"3. Thou shalt turn thy cell phone off during public performances.
I'm not even sure this one needs to be said, but given the repeated violations of this heretofore unwritten law, I felt compelled to include it."
".... more and more it is in human-measures: annoyance, irritation, and frustration. It is what makes us wish to throw away the technology even as we embrace it.
We are in real danger of a consumer backlash against annoying technologies.
We already have seen the growth of mobile-phone free zones, of prohibition against phone use, camera use, camera phones, in all sort of public and private places.
The mobile phone has been shown to be a dangerous distraction to the driver of an automobile, whether hands-free or not.
If we do nothing to overcome these problems, then the benefits these technologies bring may very well be denied us because the social costs are simply too great."
Isn't it funny how driving & sessions have the same dangers ... i.e. Drunks & Mobile Phone users!
"Several surveys have actually concluded that using a phone behind the wheel is more dangerous than drink-driving and more likely to cause a car accident."
I was thinking on Friday night of sending a text to our fiddle player ,Captain Bpart ,to remind him that sets usually go tune twice rise twice not tune twice rise from another tune three times .
See they have a use
I use my mobile mostly as my MP3 player not for calls wish it was able to record the sessions .
Ptarmigan, your concerns are about as up to date as a Mike Yarwood impression!
I've never seen a session ruined or even marred by a mobile phone, (any more than by someone talking without a phone) but I know of many great impromptu sessions convened by text that would not otherwise have happened
Someone behind me in the supermarket was arguing with his girlfriend on the phone today, and when I turned to see why he was so agitated, he gave me a nasty look like mind my own business. But if you bring your business into the market, my thought is that the problem is yours!
Maybe your fellow sessioneers, up there in Aberdeen, are still using Pigeons, to carry their messages!
But seriously, in my experience, the perfect session ambiance is like a delicate flower & it can so easily be destroyed by thoughtless eedjits in your midst.
@Mix:"... those other two session scourges - video cameras and recording machines?"
I'm curious, do you feel these are always bad, or is it more the way they're used by impolite people?
I ask because I often see recorders at sessions, and I imagine there's a big difference between "do you mind if I record this so I can learn the tunes?" and someone sticking a microphone in your face without saying a word.
I have a harder time seeing video cameras used by session musicians in a polite way, but I think visitors to the pub can be excused for wanting to record something they think is pretty cool.
Re: recording: our session is run by two ITM music teachers, they encourage everyone to bring recorders to get the tunes down.
Luckily there is very little other electronic hijinx happenuing, occasionally patrons will talk really loud but that is probably typical of the session relationship with the pub in most situations. It is a session and not a performance after all.
As for the bodhran issue, our session has a "one at a time" unspoken code for bodhran and for other instruments like banjo, guitar, and the pipes (though we're lucky to see one piper at any given time).
Save your Session!
Save your Session!
Is your session { & your sanity } under attack?

If so, for £21.50, this could be the perfect solution to the 21st Century's dreaded scourge of the Session!

Maybe now, folks will get back to talking, instead of sending text messages ... across the table!
Cheers

Re: Save your Session!
Excellent, Ptarmigan!

... but can you also advise me where I can buy a gizmo that will jam those other two session scourges - video cameras and recording machines?
Hmm - or maybe a gizmo to jam some of those ear-jarring chords that you get from some guitarists ....

UK English = mobile phone
US English = cellphone
Yes, they are rather like electronic dog-collars. Although I do own one, I rarely carry it around with me ...

That's why DoReMi notation is better: you can mishear D and G, but you probably wont mishear "re" and "sol'"
