Sad news for users of Sound lantern

It seems the Sound Lantern website is closing operations at the end of this month. Sadly it seems it wasn't profitable. A pity because it was a great idea for sharing music and other sounds, and I know a number of members of this site had Sound Lantern channels.

Re: Sad news for users of Sound lantern

Any suggestions as to where we might shift our offerings. It would be nice if all used the same place - we could almost take over :)

Re: Sad news for users of Sound lantern

YouTube is possibility, but I, for one, might want to put up an audio file without any video but perhaps with a still photo or text. Can this be done? I've looked at YT and it doesn't seem obvious.

I'll miss SoundLantern. But if it will soon end what about EZFolks?

Re: Sad news for users of Sound lantern

YouTube will work fine for this, if you create some sort of video file with your mp3 as the audio track--it can be a slide show of photographs, or even just one photo (or a "credits" screen). I have seen several "videos" on YouTube that don't have any moving pictures at all.

Microsoft Movie Maker can do this, and I imagine that iMovie for the Mac will do it too.

But YouTube will not process a plain mp3 file (I just tried). It has to be in a video format.

Re: Sad news for users of Sound lantern

Try ezFolk.com! Unlimited audio and video hosting and it's free. besides Richard, the site owner is brilliant about answering questions and keeping the site up to date. As if that wasn't enough you can use the site to host both audio and video files and link to them from your own website. You can also develop a radio station.

All the best!

Peace,
Ed

Re: Sad news for users of Sound lantern

try soundclick.com. They break music down into several genres and sub genres. World to traditional Irish, Celtic, European, folk etc etc. Check out the group Poitin. They do the best version of the Congress reel I've ever heard.

Mickray, thanks for that tip. I'll now know what to do when I'm ready.

I think Llig should host and create a site. Imagine.

Re: Sad news for users of Sound lantern

That's too bad about Soundlantern. At least they were nice enough to send out an email to their users, warning about the end.

The advantage of youtube (over the others mentioned) would be that they're not going out of business any time soon.

Re: Sad news for users of Sound lantern

Youtube is owned by Google and Google is "too big to fail" as they say.

Re: Sad news for users of Sound lantern

Out of curiosity I've just tried the soundlantern link in my bio. I got the "Page not found" message (not surprisingly), but was then directed to http://www.rufusmiles.com which appears to be taking over the soundlantern operation and is promising Sound Lantern users and visitors a new audio experience - so watch their space.
