This board is an excellent resourse, so calm down some of you...
I am relatively new to this board, but I was very surprised at some of the comments on recent discussions about how some of you feel this place is of no use.
Certainly, it's not perfect, but nothing ever is.
I have found some answers to old nagging questions I've had regarding tune names and recordings. I have finally found a place to store the tunes I know or am working on that isn't on paper (a God-awful mess otherwise). I have had a few pressing questions answered by a few of you (thank you).
This tool, like any other, is just one of many. If you want it to be some oracle of endless ITM knowledge and truth, it won't be. I'm curious why some of you seem "disgruntled" when all this is is a good place to exchange ideas, tunes, recordings, and other things.
Re: This board is an excellent resourse, so calm down some of you...
I'm not sure I know what you mean...people seem to like the mustard board; why would they keep coming to it otherwise? Perhaps you mean mtodd's recent post about sessions being a waste of time, in which case he meant actual physical sessions, not this site (at least that was my understanding).
Re: This board is an excellent resourse, so calm down some of you...
Bless you Steve, you obvious don't know a thing. If we did not discuss our drudgery we'd be forced to live it. Music is a mere distraction.
There was a brief thread involving another artform within the tradition. One I have never mastered. Makes me sad to think about miserable I am at it. But you have to go up against the best of them here. At least until McKay got canned. Here's the thread; http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/13543/comments
"Slagging" ?!

Best one I heard was a repost by Mike Harding who was being heckled quite rudely by a barman (who was used to being the centre of attention). He said "Listen mate, if it's a battle of wits you want, I don't fight with unarmed men!"
Re: This board is an excellent resourse, so calm down some of you...
Things to bear in mind when participating here:
1. Many people who post here are passionate about this music. That's good kindling for a fire.
2. Many people who post here are passionate about winding up other people just for the fireworks. Also makes good kindling.
37. A sense of humor is essential.
(f.) Some people post when inebriated or otherwise indisposed. Do not take it personally.
12. Any village with 55,000 residents is likely to have its share of eejits (see 37 above).
IV. There are real people sitting at screens on the other ends of these posts. Treat them as you'd like to be treated yourself. Not all will reciprocate, but you can make lifelong friends among the ones who do.
43. Don't bother with the trolls and begrudgers.
Re: This board is an excellent resource, so calm down some of you...
Good points. I am also passionate about this music, but I try (TRY) to keep a level head about it. I'm really glad that I found this board, but I know there are people who like to be negative and only point out its flaws.
Re: This board is an excellent resourse, so calm down some of you...
Steven, another thing to bear in mind is that some of us have been here for going on 8 years now. There's a lot of history (some good, some bad) between certain people that fills in between the hieroglyphics.
Also, some people harp about the shortcomings of this site because they see it as diluting the tradition--this was once a primarily aural, person-to-person music. And that's true--an awful lot of the music and tradition gets lost when you rely on the web as your source for the music. (But it's a great networking tool for finding people to then session with in meatspace. Use the site for what it is, eh?)
Re: This board is an excellent resourse, so calm down some of you...
I also will leap to defend this yellowing ouija board. The spirits roiling inside it never fail to tell me how, why, when, where, and if it's worth it at all to play ITM ("item") music.
Item music is the music of a happy, musical, pinkish people who were forced to live on an island not even 2/3 the size of Manhattan. The island, which was spray-painted four shiny shades of green by its oppressor, is shaped like an egg dropped on the kitchen floor. The native girls of the island come second only to Venezuelan broads when it comes to primitive charm and eerie beauty.
Re: This board is an excellent resourse, so calm down some of you...
llig, my good man, I believe that you misspelled "resource". Unless you were being, um, catty, as usual.
NPDECO: "...not even 2/3 the size of Manhattan..." - you're geography's no doubt better than mine, but that doesn't sound correct at all.
...everyone's been bitchy around here in the last few days, it seems. Probably just a sign of the times.
Anyway, I appreciate the good advice and humor (and BS, of course) that I've gotten here, and can't wait for my next evening out with my friends, on Sunday.
Re: This board is an excellent resourse, so calm down some of you...
I like being able to discuss this music with someone else besides the other musicians at the local sessions whom I have been playing music with for the past fourteen years.
Re: This board is an excellent resourse, so calm down some of you...
Back in the days of the Clash and the Sex Pistols, I had a favorite tee shirt that read "Literacy is a Cruch". The folklore revival of the 1950s and 60s was a mere spike in the age-old debate about authenticity. I suspect that very few of us here grew up in Monkstown cottage, learning our tunes and tales from shanachies (old blind guys with nothing better to do than remember all your relatives back to Cain and Abel). Educated or self taught, we are deformed by the crutch of literacy, and any effort to deny it will only make our crooked dance more clumsy to the bemused viewer. At some point you just have to accept that you ain't seamus egan and get on with the tunes however which way you learn them.

Re: This board is an excellent resourse, so calm down some of you...
I'm fairly sure that not a single one of those seven thousand odd comments would be of even the tiniest bit useful as a resource.
I remember once, early on, pointing out that a tune in the data base was a bit wrong. It ended up turning into a stupid debate about tunes can't be wrong, just different versions etc etc etc. I remember being really annoyed about it. It was clearly wrong, not a version, clearly wrong. I thought I was being helpful but no, it was utterly pointless. I'll never do it again, what a waste of time.
In the real world, my mates and I are often pointing out to each other where we might have bits of tunes wrong and it is always accepted that it's helpful. How can it be anything other?
Im sorry to say it, but the sheer weight of accumulated awful advice and uncorrected error that has built up over the years within this leviathon disqualifies it hands down from being any where near accuratly described as an excellent resourse.
Re: This board is an excellent resourse, so calm down some of you...
"this leviathan" ...hehehe, yeah! It's exactly like that picture on the cover of Hobbes's book. The thing is there's no king at the head - or is there?
It is true though, a lot of the stuff on here is plain wrong. It's handy for names & jogging the memory though.
