Hey guys,
I am starting a bodhrán making course next week, and I was wondering if anyone had extra tips on how to produce the best-quality bodhrán?
Thanks
Hey Jlocky, just make sure they show you how you to attach the 'four string' neck to it, when you have it made, so you can go on to make a 'Musical Instrument' out of it!
Just had a senior moment there, tried to log in with my reply !
If the person teaching you doesn't know how already, then they shouldn't be teaching. Just remember the first anything you make will not be your best. Stradivarius didn't achieve greatness immediately.
Now I know we should all be encouraging the stimulation of growth in the economy. And setting up a course in manufacturing should be laudable. But come on guys, you gotta draw the line somewhere?
When I was in Ireland in 97, I spoke with a fellow who said he made Bodhrans and he said something that the traditional way was to soften the skins in this unsavory sounding blend involving goat dung......
I play the box. My percussion ability is on par with my singing voice....which is to say servicable, but not my strong suit
that's right, no straight answer from this lot. Because most of us here like to play tunes. You have to go to a different enclave if you're not interested in playing tunes
My opinion: If you like to spend your time with handcraft a course in bodhrán making will be nice. If your aim is to produce a playable intrument with a good sound it will be better to buy an instrument. You need a lot of experience, you have to work with different materials (wood, skin) and you need a background knowledge, how the sound is created. You will need a lot of hints and no professional bodhrán maker will tell you his secrets. But anyway: good luck and have fun!
Bodhrán making?

Re: Bodhrán making?
Save yourself the trouble.
You can "come in with just a stick and hit it off another piece of wood" as they do in Scotland these days.

Re: Bodhrán making?
Ah. I thought one cured/de-haired the skin by soaking it in a peat bog for a year or something. Hence the pre-quel tune "Skin the Goat".

Re: Bodhrán making?
PAstrings... I suppose you could just take off the janglers and soak the Tambourine in dung!
