Just back from the delightful Lancashire Wallopers weekend where the very enjoyable Musicians' Workshop was provided by Mary and Chris Barber.
It has occured to me that rather than being accused of playing diddly - eye music English sessioneers are indulging in rumpty tumpty.
Do Germans play oompa oompa and Americans plinky plonky?

Latvians accuse Germans of playing 'um tza um tza' (or 'um tza tza', depending on the time signature)
Americans of the 5-string variety play ning-a-ning-a-ning - or thus I have heard them imitated on many an occasion.

The vagaries of the Northumbrian Pipes cannot be encapsulated in any string of vocables with a regular rhythm.
Mighty computers may even now be working to produce something sufficiently random by way of paraphrase.
