double fiddle case on a plane

double fiddle case on a plane

I have to do some flying and I have to take both the electric and the acoustic with me. I'd rather not check either instrument, but I do have a double case which I use when I have a gig which requires both instruments. has anyone encountered any problems with taking a double fiddle case as a carry-on?

Re: double fiddle case on a plane

I have taken a double before many times successfully.
The main problem I encountered is when other
peoples' sh-te is in the overhead compartment and
my case won't fit. But usually I can move a pillow
or rearrange their sh- and then it's fine. A couple
of times I called to the attention of the flight
attendants that there was no room and they stowed
my axes in their secret hiding place for the flight.

Re: double fiddle case on a plane

I was once allowed to carry two fiddles in two cases in the cabin. I had gone to the airport thinking one fiddle would be in the baggage hold, so was very pleasantly surprised when the counter lady said: Violins are light aren't they. You can take them both in the cabin (thank you thank you). It was lucky because we hit an electrical storm over the airport where my two flights were connecting, we eventually arrived over two hours late at our final destination. In the kerfuffle caused by the storm, they lost the baggage of all the people from the first flight transfering to the second. So I landed with two fiddles and a handbag but nothing else.

Simple solution,

Play an Electro Acoustic :-)

Having said that, I carry two Sonic Violins in a double case from UK to EU with different carriers and have never had a problem - I carry an MU card. My double case measures 80x30x20 cm

Re: double fiddle case on a plane

I recently flew with my fiddle over the holidays. Since the airlines are charging to check bags, everybody and their dog is bringing on tons of carry on stuff.

I was lucky that I was able to find a place to stash my case. One leg of the flight my fiddle was 20 rows away because the flight was so full

and that's another thing: the airlines are running fewer routes, so all the flights are full now

They even now force people who's carry on bag is rather large to check it with the gate attendant, then they put it in the luggage hold, which you definitly don't want to do

If you only have your fiddle case and the case doesn't look obnoxiously big, you're in good shape.

But if you want to carry a bunch of other stuff on, they may decide for you what gets put on the cart to go out to the luggage hold - so be forewarned!

flying is different now

Re: double fiddle case on a plane

I have two fiddle cases. The one with the Strad I'd obviously keep with me at all times, but the other (containing the Guaneri) I'd get some other passenger to carry on as hand luggage for me.

Re: double fiddle case on a plane

I'll take my chances with the double case as my only carry-on, no personal item. I'll just check my suitcases and pack my gig bag. Thanks, all!

And Titch - I'd love to try out one of those Sonic violins, but alas, I am in the US, with no chance of getting across the pond anytime soon.
