Oldnews from Ballymuck

Oldnews from Ballymuck

"Have you heard of Phil the Fluther, of the town of Ballymuck?
The times were going hard with him, in fact the man was broke.
So he just sent out a notice to his neighbours, one an all
As to how he'd like their company that evening at a ball.
And when writin' out he was careful to suggest to them,
That if they found a hat of his convanient to the dure,
The more they put in, whenever he requested them
The better would the music be for batterin the floour."

100 years later and not much has changed.. lol

Re: Oldnews from Ballymuck

Sorry, guess I need to explain ...
When I was a little boy, back before the 2nd World
War, there were still many House Dances, many
musicians who plied a good trade - but occasionaly
there would be one or two who couldn't make much
money - so this song

http://incolor.inebraska.com/jskean/phil.htm

was very popular among the Farmers where we lived,
BTW in a long Thatched House, no longer there.

The tune is very easy and you can find it at
http://www.mudcat.org.

The song still causes me to wriggle in fits
of laughter since I know what Percy French
described - in type rather than real person OC.
It was not meant to be mean or taken that way,
in fact if you check out the pictures on the
Beecham website above the characters in the
Postcards are having as good a time of it as
the writer.

A good parody title might be "Filthy Fluthers Ball".

Re: Oldnews from Ballymuck

Ottery sorry you had to endure the oldfella humming
it, but you must admit itz a great tune; while on
the topic of nonstandard Irishtradance music, isn't
it a shame few know a thing about this enormous
Irish genre?

Re: Oldnews from Ballymuck

Aaaaaargghhh! It's triggered something off in my brain! I keep remembering these tunes my old dad used to sing.. They weren't all Irish. There was 'The Darktown Strutters Ball' which I suppose must be American. Every time he and my mum went out he'd sing the first few lines, "I'm a gonna get you in a taxi honey, better be ready 'bout half past eight..." And there were loads of old music hall songs about people plastering the parlour (with or without parlour guitars), and people swimming against the tide in the bath.
Oh God, sorefingers, what have you started?
