Paul Meehan is a great guitarist but so is Tim. He is a musical genius with flair and imagination and probably never plays anything the same way twice. Great stuff!
Nitpicking -
Hennessy spell his first name 'Donogh'
He did leave the band to pursue other musical interests with Pauline Scanlon (singer). BTW I gather that he writes some of his tunes on the whistle but never played whistle at concerts with Lunasa.
"Paul's pretty handy on the Banjo an Donough is a no bad whistle player, all multi instrumentalists."
Tim Edey also plays banjo and piano - and probably a dozen or so other instruments we don't know about. He has phenomenal musical ability, although I find some of his musical ideas hard to comprehend. I would say that being a 'backer' in the strictest sense is probably not his strongest point - he is brimming with musical innovation, which would not necessarily be appreciated by musicians who merely want to be 'backed'. He is much better suited to playing with musicians who are willing and able to respond to ideas, as well as have him respond to theirs.
I met a retired rock musician, who'd been in a headlining chart band for a while, and he commented on leaving and breaking-up in bands "It's all about money."
That, and maybe being fed up with being with the same guys all the time. You get longest-living bands, like the Chieftains, who only meet on stage when they're on tour.
Tim Edey, why is he not in Lunasa anymore?

Re: Tim Edey, why is he not in Lunasa anymore?
I don't know
but my guess would be that Paul Meehan is way better guitar player as well as he fits more in style that Donogh used to play.

What I'd like to know is why Donough left the band???
Who's Tim Edey?

Re: Tim Edey, why is he not in Lunasa anymore?
I don't think that's why Tim left, Padre - he is an immense guitar player. You might be on to something with 'fitting in' with the previous sound.
Shame if a band couldn't evolve when a great but different member joined, don't you think?

It could be because he irritates them?

Apologies if I am getting above my station.
