Found this guy on youtube who plays mainly banjo, I do like his rhythm, quite a percussive style for banjo. Wish I had more of that side to my playing. http://www.youtube.com/user/tantoonie0
Was just wondering what other players would think of him.
I don't get this tutorial at all though. Played on a mandolin as he says it's easier to handle in front of the camera. It's meant to explain hammer on triplets, but I don't hear any triplets in the tune. Well not in the usual sense they're referred to in jigs on the banjo, i.e 3 notes in the space of two. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leOMOdMSOvM&feature=channel
Huh. Well, he's fine. It's a decidedly American folk music feel to the rhythms of the tunes. Now that I say that, I wish I could describe it better. I don't feel the weight on the beats where I would expect to, and it's pretty square. The jigs I heard were, um, fast, and both jigs and reels rushed some in a way I found distracting.
The triplets as he's doing them is a kind of workaround or kludge. They're usually done with only the pick, not with that weird hammer-on thing in the middle. they don't sound right. In regards to what you're saying, I don't think of triplets in this music as "three notes in the place of two", I think of it as an ornament that has three strikes - they're not spread out evenly.
Here are some good triplets with some good closeup work on the camera.
I thought the player in the original post (tantoonie0) had a very original style. Whatever he is doing, whether his ornaments are evenly spaced or not, is very natural to him.
It's refreshing to hear music from someone who is so comfortable playing their instrument that personal style is an extension of picking up the instrument. I agree that the jigs are pretty quick - but the reels are very good.
Gerry O'Connor - wizard that he is and every bit as charming in his own way - sounds like a brain surgeon by compare.
Sounds ok - I don't think he's trying to be another Enda Scahill.
If I played banjo though I think I'd be aiming for 'crunchier' triplets,
but I don't even like banjo
au contraire Tiger, personally, I found it rather a bland style, lacking in the usual good driving rhythmic style I normally associate with the Tenor Banjo.
Lovely to hear so many different views about playing the banjo. I'm a bit of a plucker myself, and, since this is a "whadda ya think of this guy" thread, whadda ya'll think of this guy (me):
I'm sure you get the distinction between Bluegrass Banjo & Old Time Banjo playing ............. well, as you've probably guessed, I'm very much in the Old Time camp.
He's good. He's got his own style - and he's got rhythm.
I'm a bit reluctant to criticise him, in light of the last comment in his YouTube profile - but I'll assume he was talking about out-and-out discouragement rather than constructive criticism. For what my little opinion is worth, I find his renditions a bit lacking in variation - but perhaps his variations are just too subtle for my ears. Anyway, his lack of variation is made up for by his individual interpretations of tunes.
His mandolin and bouzouki playing is very nice, although it does have something of an 'Old-Time' feel to it (as reenactor also opined). Perhaps he came to Irish music from an Old time/Bluegrass background. However, this is less obvious to me in his tenor banjo playing (maybe just because tenor banjo isn't played in Old Time and Bluegrass).
I'm pleased to see so many different styles at exhinited and found something to appreciate in all the players.
I'm with ptarmagan though, I personally greatly prefer the style of playing on Brian's videos. (I think I probably misunderstood what you were saying on another recent thread Ptarm).
I think of all the trad instruments the banjo is perhaps the most prone to the temptation to make the tune secondary to showing off technique. (And at the far end of that road await all those x-factor contestants wallowing in their melisma). The tunes should always come first.
That's my 2c mind, and I'm not accusing any of the folks highlighted here of overdoing things. I just like my view of the musical vista to remian unobscured by musicians jumping up and down waving their arms in front of the tune. So to speak
Ptarmigan - I share your reverence for McGrath and Carberry. They set great standards for the rest of us to aspire to. But most of us, by comparison, are still beginners - whether due to the actual length of time we've been playing or the amount of time we have had available to play over the years, or the opportunities we've had to learn from the greats, or dare I say it, our natural aptitude. (Pt. - I do not necessarily include you here, as I know you've been at this game a lot longer than I have).
So, if we regard Mr. Tantoonie as the learner that he is, then he's pretty d@#n good. I couldn't play like him - and whilst I wouldn't really want to play just like him, there are certainly things he does that I would like to be able to do.
Dark Raven - For the first 30 seconds or so, I thought you were playing a 5-string. That's mighty impressive technique - you've no doubt been told that enough times before. But I share Ptarmigan's preference for rhythm and subtlety. I like to be able to register every note of the tune. I prescribe a year in Connemara - and lay of the double espressos for a while. ;.)
Hey Bic Mac, point of order, there are no begrudgers here. Dark Raven came on here asking for opinions & that's what he got. He saw the honest replies to the original poster & presumably wanted more of the same, on his own style of playing.
I'm sure the guy knows he's a really good Banjo player, so it's pretty obvious he didn't just come on here to hear praise from a load of patronising sycophants.
Of course, as a self-confessed regular reader here, he would know only too well that there's not much chance of anyone getting that sort of treatment anyway, on the session/org!
Hugo and Davydd - wonderful links there, thanks. They are useful in this discussion as a contrast to what many of us would say is "Irish Banjo style " vs. the unique style and new interpretations of Tatoonie. I thought Dark Raven had a wonderfully light and fluid touch in his playing, and Tatoonie has a flowing hybrid of a bluegrass feel superimposed over trad tunes. Not my cuppa tea personally, but there is no denying his talent.
I would be curious to hear how well Tatoonie's free rolling style would blend in a session setting with other players.
Ptarmigan, thanks for the great links to vid's of Brian. He's one of the best players around (and the reason why I bought the first Four Men & a Dog album). I'm not really a great fan of Angelina though, but, that's my own preference.
As for keeping the tune, I allmost never go "to far" with ornamentation at sessions, but will try to go as far as possible when playing gigs or, as in the Youtube vid's, flying solo.
Sometimes, the pieces I've played for a couple of years are so 'there' in the fingers that they cry out for testing ornamentation.
But, hey, everyone his or her own. I'm just glad I posted this here and got some good, honest feedback (I like that).
I met him 7 or 8 years ago, when he was about 16. He was good even then. He was on a School trip to London and was given special dispensation to make a pilgrimage to Richmond-upon-Thames for one of Mick O'Connor's sessions.
I'm still pretty much the beginner I was back then .

Hi Raven, I guess there are about as many different opinions on Irish Banjo playing, as there are styles!

That said, my own preference is for a stronger emphasis on rhythm, with a double doze of subtlety.
For an example of what I like, check out Brian's playing here.
It is glorious.

Re: What do people think of this player?
Nice playing Dark Raven, you've obviously got a passion for your instrument and seem to have no fear of the neck.
A banjo has 19 frets (standard scale) and so many people never get beyond the fifth fret except the occasional b on the seventh.
I,m not going to add a 'but' here as we're all on a constant learning curve and open to all kinds of influence and criticism.
Experimentation should not be a dirty word as long as the original melody reigns supreme and you show respect for the tune.
Enjoy your instrument, enjoy your music, listen, learn and gruck the befudgers!!...
