CATSKILLS IRISH ARTS WEEK FUNDING in JEOPARDY - PLEASE ACT
HELLO
Anyone who has attended this annual event knows how important it is - see following message. And please act!
We are reaching out for your immediate aid in reaching members of the New York State Legislature who are being asked to consider Gov. David Patterson's latest Budget Cuts. As proposed, it would have a severe impact on the Catskills Irish Arts Week and the Andy McGann Festival, which last year received $12,000 through NYSCA (http://www.nysca.org/index.html) and the Greene County Council on the Arts through programs funded by NY State.
We have already been advised that no funding will be forthcoming in 2009 if these suggested cuts are not reinstated, and it could lead to a curtailment of our activities during the week of July 12-18 if our budget is not aided by NY State.
Please follow the links to find a NYS representative and tell them that the Arts do matter and help the economic well-being of the state; and that programs like the CIAW generate a lot of income for a depressed area like East Durham for the best week the local businesses have all year servicing people from as many as 35 U.S. States who come in for the Arts Week.
It is vitally important for the area and for small non-profits like the M.J. Quill Irish Cultural and Sports Centre to receive direct support from NYSCA for its cultural programs servicing Greene County.
Re: CATSKILLS IRISH ARTS WEEK FUNDING in JEOPARDY - PLEASE ACT
I'm afraid the debate in New York State is over for this year because last Tuesday the Legislature passed a bill confirming the cuts that Gov. Patterson imposed at the end of the calendar year cutting off $7 millon dollars in Arts Funding where any allocations for the CIAW would come from for this year. There is always next year though the fiscal outlook is even dimmer there for the NYS budget and the economy.
While the NY State funding was in jeopardy, the CIAW itself was not and plans to maintain a full schedule of classes, lectures, concerts and sessions as usual and hopes that the usual crowd will be there to enjoy it for another year which it now numbering 15 in East Durham

As for the main website, a new version is in the works where more information will be available shortly.
