Tunes images..

Tunes images..

Can anybody help.
I would like to be able to get the images of tunes onto my computer
so that I can arrange them in files for learning.
I'm using a mac running osx leopard.
I've tried dragging the image onto my desktop
downloading the gif and opening it in several application
but it always open in a kind of grey background negative
which is very difficult to read.
Does this happen to anybody else..?
Any siggestions...?

Re: Tunes images..

I thought we were in a bit of writing like that on the Molloy / Brady / Peoples album cover, and no doubt others.

Sorry though, can't help with the computer question.

Re: Tunes images..

The sheetmusic gifs have a transparent background. Each program manage that in a different way. Firefox shows them with a white blackground. Is there a firefox version for Mac? You can edit the files with some program to change the background to solid white, too.
Or you can make your own images pasting the abc in http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html
or you can learn abc...

Re: Tunes images..

Paulflute -

If the tunes in question are ones available on this site, you can download a .gif file of the score of any tune (apart from the ones most recently submitted).

You can then use whatever graphics software you have on your computer to view the gif files.

Re: Tunes images..

Thanks for that Ramiro.
I had tried Firefox also and the same thing happens.
They open fine in firefox but when I try to gett the gif
onto my harddrive it gots a grey background.
I hadn't thought of using the abc converter.
This does work. It's a little long winded
but at least it's useable. ta..

Re: Tunes images..

You can drag the GIF into a text document - MS Word in my case, then veiw and print from there. Still a bit of hassle I suppose.

Re: Tunes images..

It's quite odd that several applications are giving you this problem. Gifs can be a bit unpredictable sometimes, so probably the ABC / concertina.net thing is less long-winded than trying to recover the correct transparency.

Re: Tunes images..

Did I write blackground? Really?

Re: Tunes images..

I probably have the wrong idea about this, but I'm trying to imagine what the images of tunes such as - 'Stick the knife in and pull it out again' - 'I buried my wife and danced on her grave' - etc - might look like?

Re: Tunes images..

The best solution if you're going to work with abc is probably to just get a decent abc program that works on your Mac, and just download the abc's or your whole tunebook from thesession.org.

I use abcNavigator and abcMus for the PC. There's at least two Mac-compatible programs listed in the Links|ABC Software area: Barfly and Five Line Skink. Some of the others listed may also have a Mac version, but the Links section doesn't say so.

Generally speaking, the output from dedicated software is easier to work with than a bunch of downloaded GIFs.

Re: Tunes images..

You're right there, KeepFiddlin'. A good program will output your music as a nice crisp image.

Graphics come in two flavours: vector graphics and bitmaps. Vector graphics are produced by many desktop programs and are simply sets of lines and curves. You can zoom in infinitely to a vector graphic (try it with a piece of text!) and it will have a nice crisp edge, whereas bitmap image formats such as gifs and jpgs are made up of a "grid" of small squares of varying brightness which make up the image. They won't look crisp if you examine them closely but work well for photographs and for viewing on the web. Most commercial graphics will be done in vector format to look good when printed, which needs much higher resolution than a computer screen needs.

Just working on a CD graphic at the moment so it's in my head!

Re: Tunes images..

Yeah, Barfly will take the ABC and output a decent shot of the dots, but for the smoothest looking ones, you could use the Convert-O-Matic (http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html), and select the PDF output.

You're really better off letting the tunes reside in your memory, though, because thats where they will thrive and grow, instead of the stagnation that comes with sheet music... You can keep the ABCs around for a memory aid if you feel the need.

If your image is opening in "Preview", find "Preferences" under "Preview" in the menu bar then in "General" reset the background color using the color chart slider.

Re: Tunes images..

This works on my Mac G4 OSX 10.2.8 "Jaguar" (I use FireFox but I don't think it matters which browser you use):-

1. Do a "Print As PDF" (this produces a black-on-white image on my Mac)

2. Open the file in Preview

3. Position and zoom in as required

4. Grab a screenshot of the bit you want!
