Burns Night tunes

Burns Night tunes

Apart from the obligatory burns stuff, any suggestion for tunes for a burns night session? Are Shetland tunes acceptable? Most of my repertoire is Shetland tunes, so i'm a bit stuffed if they're not. I'm doing a burns night with our morris side and I'm guessing they won't want to hear morris tunes! I'll have to print out some music fairly sharpish though....

Re: Burns Night tunes

Morris you say - what about "Highland Mary", then?

# Posted on January 23rd 2009 by Mix O'Lydian

Re: Burns Night tunes

Highland mary is the tune we play at outs when the dancers have a rest. Not sure it's scottish though. Thanks for the suggestions so far, guys.

Re: Burns Night tunes

Guys? It's only been me making suggestions so far!

Another thought: can your tea-chest bassist play in "A" ;-)

Re: Burns Night tunes

You could finish the evening with:

Green Hills (a retreat march)

and

We'll Noo Awa' that Bides Awa'

Re: Burns Night tunes

Sorry, I didn't read the name after the comment....just had a thought about playing in 'A'.....the melodion player just isn't going to get there is he? So much for diatonics then...Ha ha ha!
I suppose we'll have a rousing rendition of Scotland the Brave at some point, have to draw the line at Flower of Scotland though...

Re: Burns Night tunes

There's always Scott-Skinner. Laird of Drumblair and Music o' Spey are on our list. We havinbg our bash on Saturday instead of the proper day itself this year.

Re: Burns Night tunes

Freddy - you'll have to get thet melodeon player of yours to upgrade to a three-rwo ;-)

By the way, we also have to play for a Burns night, and your thread kinda focussed my my mind on the need to do a bit of a practice!

Something else to think about. Will your caller be doing the Eightsome Reel? That's a traditional dance at a Burns night. It can be a bit of a nightmare, as it's 464 bars long, you need 5 tunes for it and the music "formula" is quite complex:

Beginning Section
-------------------------

Devil Among the Tailors - AAABB = 40 bars

Middle Section
--------------------

(Another Reel - AABBAB) x 2 = 96 bars
(Another Reel - AABBAB) x 2 = 96 bars
(Another Reel - AABBAB) x 2 = 96 bars
(Another Reel - AABBAB) x 2 = 96 bars

End Section
----------------

Devil Among the Tailors - AAABB = 40 bars

Re: Burns Night tunes

Typo. I meant, three-row, of course...

Re: Burns Night tunes

We don't have a caller or anything, it's just a music session in a small pub - there's no room for dancing anyhow!

Re: Burns Night tunes

Mix- " The Green Hills of Tyroll" ? is that the tune youmean? (retreat) lovely tune.

Re: Burns Night tunes

and speaking of "morris" tunes, does anyone still play "Truckles"?...

Re: Burns Night tunes

Freddy - no worries about the eightsome reel, then!

Re: Burns Night tunes

Yes, that's the one Pipes - "The Green Hills of Tyrol". Many Scottish pipers refer to it just as "Green Hills"

When done as a song, it's known as "the Scottish soldier", and sung in a major key.

I prefer it as a retreat march myself, with the flattened seventh. What say you?

Re: Burns Night tunes

Pipes - the tune that you referred to is actually called "Trunckles".

It's one of the dances/tunes that's part of the Bampton tradition (the latter being a trraditional side).

So the Bampton side would certainly be playing it for that particular dance, and so would plenty of other Morris sides too.

Don't play it myself though - but if you hummed it, I would certainly recognise it.

Re: Burns Night tunes

As well as Highland Mary, Flowers of Edinburgh is another Morris tune with Scottish origins.

Oh dear, The characters have blown back and the haggis has exploded. It did look better than that...

Re: Burns Night tunes

mix- being a former highland piper i'm very familiar with the tune as a retreat . i can't recall ever hearing the song you mention. Also i'm better at playing "Trunckles" than i am at spelling it

Scottish Soldier

Pipes - Here are the lyrics to the song:

There was a soldier,
A Scottish soldier
Who wandered far away
And soldiered far away
There was none bolder,
With good broad shoulder
He's fought in many a fray,
And fought and won.
He'd seen the glory
And told the story
Of battles glorious
And deeds neforious
But now he's sighing,
His heart is crying
To leave these green hills of Tyrol.

Chorus
----------
Because these green hills
Are not highland hills
Or the island hills,
The're not my land's hills
And fair as these green foreign hills may be
They are not the hills of home.

2. And now this soldier,
This Scottish soldier
Who wandered far away
And soldiered far away
Sees leaves are falling
And death is calling
And he will fade away,
In that far land.
He called his piper,
His trusty piper
And bade him sound a lay
A pibroch sad to play
Upon a hillside,
A Scottish hillside
Not on these green hills of Tyrol.

(Chorus)

3. And so this soldier,
This Scottish soldier
Will wander far no more
And soldier far no more
And on a hillside,
A Scottish hillside
You'll see a piper play
His soldier home.
He'd seen the glory,
He'd told his story
Of battles glorious
And deeds victorious
The bugles cease now,
He is at peace now
Far from those green hills of Tyrol.

(Chorus)
