hey
after a failed attempt to buy from a Sessions musician, I thought I'd try ya'll once more before i say #$%^ it and stick with Youtube.
im just trying to find some harmonica music like the kind id like to learn.
you wouldnt think it would be such a battle, but it has...
anyway,
im looking for Traditional Irish Harmonica.
no chromatics
no tremolo, etc...
just Diatonics 10 hole Irish Harmonica.
It seems (if i got the terms right now) I like slower SLIP JIGS (more melancholy type?), and Air (droney type).
If that makes sense and anyone can suggest a CD, or a local mate that cut a CD or sends downloads or something, please lmk.
Note: I have used Search, etc.... and I checked the bunch from my last thread, but things like - Pigtown sounded too modern/mountainy?, I got ahold of Tommy Basker, but it's note a Pure Sound, it's more Vamping/chording.
Well, thanks in advance for any help anyone feels like throwing in.
James Conway - Mouth Box One of the best you will get your hands on. iTunes actually carries it, which made me happy, as I couldn't find it anywhere else. It's got a pretty heavy rotation on my iPhone.
Steve Shaw - Blowing Through the Reeds Aside from being one of the primary sources of information for ITM Harmonica on these and any other boards, Steve's CD is absolutely wonderful. It competes with Mouth Box for top rotation spot. You will need to get it from his site though ( http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/trad_irish_harmonica/ )
For pure ITM with Diatonic, that's your two best bets...
Now, that said, don't miss out on these gems...
The Trip to Cullenstown - Phil, John and Pip Murphy Diatonics, Tremolos and Chromatics all. AMAZING. You will learn a TON from listening to this CD.
Open House - Kevin Burke The playing on this CD is top notch.
New Irish Harmonica - Brendan Power Come ON...most of what he does carries over to diatonics and though he definitely strays from traditional from time to time, he knows the tradition and once again, you can learn a lot from it. It's also a great listen.
Master of the Solo Diatonic Harmonica - Sam Hinton He covers pretty much every tradition one can imagine. The stories he tells and just the old style of Hinton makes this an incredible resource for any folk harmonica player. You can get this one on CDBaby.
Handy Little Rig - James Thurgood James vamps while he plays, and it's Maritime and not just Irish, but it's a great CD that really shows different approaches to playing that you aren't going to see in a lot of other places. CDBaby has this and it's worth the cost.
That's just off the top of my head. I also listen to a lot of Fiddle and Accordion music lately to see what I can get from them as far as style. The Lonesome Touch is currently top of my listening queue (sorry Steve).
OK. Now I don't mind selling anyone a copy of my CD but what I DON'T want is a torrent of emails questioning the cost of it (especially now that the pound is worth bugger all against foreign dough) and about losing my already-provided Paypal email address. All that, and all these posts on two forums that are making me look like an even bigger prize prick than a lot of you already know I am. And no, when I say it's £6 in the UK, postage included, I do NOT mean that it's £6, post included, translated into any currency on earth and SENT to anywhere on earth. If I had this correspondence for every copy of the bloody thing I sell (net profit per copy £1.50, which goes towards what I had to pay out to get it recorded - ten days in a studio, OK?) I'd have gone stark staring mad years ago Yes, he was a friend, but he had to attend to me instead of hand-crafting his superb guitars, his day job. The good ol' Royal Mail charges me a ton more to post overseas, and Paypal take their cut as well, on top of not providing exactly the world's most generous exchange rate. I've managed to sell dozens to people on TheSession, Chiff, Harp-L and elsewhere, all without incident. All I ask for is the transmission of the requested amount of dough and then I'll get one in the post. It's a simple system and it works. I'm on a pension you see. It could be my brain I suppose. The unmusical sound you imagine accompanying this post is that of clumps of my hair saying a permanent goodbye to their beloved follicles.
Good list, Richard. Have a look at the Irish Music Review list too. I recommend Jean Sabot's CD warmly (he is a mate of mine though! ) Another thing - I would never limit myself to listening to just one kind of harmonica-playing. All the good 'uns playing Irish can show you a lot about good rhythm, articulation and spirit, as well as demonstrating the possibilities for ornamentation, regardless of whether it's blues harp, tremolo or chrom. Listen to 'em all, and get tons of tips listening top ANY well-played ITM, no matter what instruments are being played.
Steve, I kept you out of it, but you make these harsh public posts for some reason.
You were kind and offered harmonica type information, WHICH I took and decided to stay Paddy.
We had no issue.
I asked to buy your CD, that was ALL. The site said one price... your email said one that was 50% higher, I I told you I could not afford. I also complimented your work, that I would see if I can, but I didn't expect the extra. THAT WAS ALL.
you go and put that post about not making music for the goodness of your soul or something, and that was a personal afront mate.
I STILL enjoyed your music, and found the cash to buy. I simply ASKED FOR YOUR PAYPAL. THAT'S ALL.
No communication. I emailed twice looking for you because ONCE you said you missed the email, and then nadda.
So after days of no word from you on your paypal to pay you (nice and easy like you say), I said Screw it, my family said screw it, this guy must be playing around with you.
So.... I put a post in here, and crossed it on Harp-L... (like no one posts in both places, come on Steve).
And now.... THIS is the reply I get, public forum, all weirded up and all I wanted was to purchase.
So no mate, I don't know what your issue is. There were only a few emails to try to reach you. YOU made a few reposting your cost breakdown WHICH I NEVER ASKED FOR. your price is your price. I was a manufacturer, I told you I understood, I was just trying to find the funds.
If it takes immediate payment and expect no emails to buy from you, regardless of how good you obviously are, forget it.
I've posted a ton of advice here, on Chiff and on Harp-l, as have others, like Winslow. I'm just the little guy. I can only groan. Mate, if you want a copy just PM me to ask for my email. Please do not PM me for any other reason, eg. to have it out with me again, lest it should lead to my premature death. I am a very delicate being, as all here know. I WAS hoping to make it to 87 in good health, endure a short, painless illness with just enough time to let the wife know where I've hidden the policies, then return gracefully to stardust. Help me on this one.
My impression Jim, was that you posted this thread before, got a cartload of recommendations but you decided they weren't tailor-made enough for you and so you start this one off all huffy like nobody made the effort the first time.
Your response to Steve pretty much confirms that impression.
Hi Tony, welcome to the fray! I can tell y'all that Black Mountain harmonica is a cracker. Tony has some great ideas for retuning to get harps playing the tunes with the greatest felicity, and his CD proves that the approach works! His site is well worth a long visit.
Kilfarboy -- thanks for the thoughts mate, but if you've had nothing to do with anything, it's kind of bad form to make an assumption about a fella. Is it really necessary to continue a thread like this, in this kind of spirit, really?
A simply matter got sour somehow. One question asked about how to pay obviously got mistaken for a pricing complaint I guess; which was certainly not the case, and in bad form got made public... anyway, enough wasted air, seriously. There's a better way to blow hot air, yes? (ie, harmonica)
And yeah, I've gotten some cool recommends, which brings me to:
HarmonicaTunes --> GREAT SITE, LOVE the sound clips. I'm just checking it now as I'm in the middle of work. Back at you "privately" later.
Thanks mate - nice clear tunes !
I'll take my browsing off board now.
Thanks again to those who offered constructive thoughts and sorry for any ill-received communication.
One more try--- harmonica CDs or Downloads ?

Re: One more try--- harmonica CDs or Downloads ?
I've recorded some Irish harmonica music on the 10 hole. You can check it out at www.harmonicatunes.com/freeharmonicamusic
If you really like it, then you can buy my CD "Black Mountain Harmonica" through the site. There are even lessons showing how it's done.
Hope this helps
