Steve Martin plays banjo in cobblestone bar dublin

Steve Martin plays banjo in cobblestone bar dublin

Steve Martin joined the traditional musicians in the cobblestone pub in dublin on a recent friday night along with some of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Mary Black. He is a mighty fine banjo player!

HA! That's great to hear.

I've know of his musical talents ever since I was a wee lad back in the late 70s, thanks Muppet Show:

Re: Steve Martin plays banjo in cobblestone bar dublin

Yeah - there was a hilarious photo shoot of him with the banjo in (I think), "Rolling Stone" sometime in the late 70's/early 80's:

-Steve Martin plays "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" - he's staring blankly straight ahead into space.
-Steve Martin plays "Purple Haze" - he's crouched down a bit and his face is all puckered up, and he's bending strings WAY above than the twelfth fret.
There was probably an "Old Rugged Cross" or something in there where he's gazing rapturously heavenward...
..you get the drift...
Nice pickin' anyway.

Re: Steve Martin plays banjo in cobblestone bar dublin

Yeah he's farely good on that ol' 5-string!
There's a very good clip on youtube where he plays with Béla Fleck and Ricky Skaggs- it's excellent! Sorry I can't find the link?

Re: Steve Martin plays banjo in cobblestone bar dublin

I recall reading somewhere that he started out with a pro bluegrass band before getting into comedy. I remember part of his routine was to put on his banjo, say something to the effect of "I just bought one of these things" then rip into some incredible breakdown, and then exclaim, both surprised and pleased, "Wow! This is EASY!"

Re: Steve Martin plays banjo in cobblestone bar dublin

Yep, he can play the banjo !
Saw his name in an unexpected context a little while ago. Was visiting the Edward Hopper exhibition at the Tate Modern here in London, and one of his big open-air paintings from Cape Cod was labelled "On loan from Steve Martin".
Here's a man who has made lots of money by entertaining millions, and with some of it has bought this beautiful painting to enjoy for himself, but he loans it out so that other people can see it too.
He's one of the good guys, by my reckoning.
I have a nice warm feeling at the moment, some of it engendered by watching bits of the O'Bama inaugerration on tv............

Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges, and many other films) is apparently a talented fiddle player:

Re: Steve Martin plays banjo in cobblestone bar dublin

Sunday Times page 3 states that Steve Martin contacted Mary Black to do the vocals on a song called Calico Train,on his new album of banjo music, he has long been a fan of hers. He flew into Dublin by private jet , recorded the track then went to the sessiun in the Cobblestone bar where he joined in the sessiun then returned to the airport where his jet was waiting.
