ITM - Harmonica CDs, suggestions?

ITM - Harmonica CDs, suggestions?

Realizing there are a lot of varied types of Traditional Irish Music for the Harmonica, and the short supply of clear songs on Youtube,

was wondering if some folks could make suggestions for "available" CDs for Harmonica Music.

I'm not looking for ones that only feature one or two harmonica songs, or used only as accompaniment.

I'm looking for traditional irish music on the harmonica, a fiddle as background/accompaniment is fine.

Think Beginner looking to get familiar with some great harmonica playing tunes, and maybe use to play along with later.

Thanks mates.

ps- i think what im starting to appreciate more are the slower "jigs" and "set-dances" ?

Listened to a clip by Steve Shaw, called The Butterfly (slip jig), and Out On The Ocean & Blarney Pilgrim (jig)

Also, on youtube Rick Epping doing the BlackBird (at ironlung 2004)

Amazing !

Thanks

Have a look at my slightly out-of-date harmonica discography at http://www.irishmusicreview.com. That should get you started.

Re: ITM - Harmonica CDs, suggestions?

Andy Irvine does a lot of work with harmonica & bouzouki/mandola. Perhaps not what you are ultimately looking for, but could give you an idea of how it sounds. There are a few vids of Andy and his harmonica on Hans Speek's Irish Bouzouki site.

And of course, don't forget Wexfords finest, Jonn and Pip Murphy.

The Trip to Cullenstown is the CD title and they made it with their father Phil who sadly passed away some years ago.

There is a festival every year in Carrig on Bannow, Wexford, for the last 17 years to commemorate Phil and although it had some lean years is still one of the best tradfests around. Usually the last weekend of july......

Re: ITM - Harmonica CDs, suggestions?

Google "Don Kavanagh Harmonica" for a great CD "A Dubliner and His Harmonica". Nothing more to be said.

Re: ITM - Harmonica CDs, suggestions?

Two of my fave albums irregardless of harp content:

"Pigtown Fling" - Randal Bays & Joel Bernstein

"Open House" - Kevin Burke with Mark Graham (harmonica)

Also seek out "Jean Sabot & Laors Dacquay" - Breton, Scottish & Irish tunes...

and for a pretty wild Canadian album seek out Mike Stevens "The World is Only Air" where he plays, among other things, Big John MacNeil in four keys with a single diatonic harp.

Re: ITM - Harmonica CDs, suggestions?

Aye, Jean Sabot is a genius. He tears harps to pieces and butchers the insides and then rebuilds them to be the perfect instruments for ITM, and he's brilliant in sessions. Fearless he is! He seems to know thousands of tunes, the bugger!! He's a lovely bloke to boot. That's a great CD of his you mentioned. You can probably get it via his website. It's reviewed at Geoff''s site here:

Re: ITM - Harmonica CDs, suggestions?

Pigtown Fling can be had from Celtic Grooves, Ossian USA, or CD Baby. Outstanding album by Eddie Clarke's American protege on harmonica, Joel Bernstein, and Randal Bays on fiddle. Clarke's stuff is harder to come by, since "Crossroads" with Joe Ryan has never been re-issued on CD.

Re: ITM - Harmonica CDs, suggestions?

Rick Epping also did a fun CD with Frankie Gavin, called "Jiggin' the Blues"
