I just signed up for Facebook the other day, it seems pretty cool. Cherish the Ladies are on there. Someone on here said it was like Myspace for grownups, so I signed up. I actually found a lot of my friends on there.
I don't think anyone over 40 has a Facebook account; it seems for kids. I opened one, to my kids' horror, and was told in no uncertain terms that Facebook was for kids and to close the account.
No one I know has one, so it would'nt help me at all. But then, I still like cassette tapes and rotary telephones.
Myspace is really good for showing off. Showing everyone how cool you are. "Hey everyone, come and look at my space, it's really cool and sparkly, to reflect just how cool and sparkly I really am!"
Facebook is for communication. All FB profiles look essentially the same, so there's almost no room for the ego-tripping you get on Myspace.
So, for keeping up with friends? Facebook, for sure. But publicising your band? Definitely Myspace.
PS. Yes, some adults do have Facebook accounts (OK, I'm 19, technically an adult, but you know what I mean), but those adults are generally considered losers by the general, younger FB populace. But then again, we consider most adults to be losers anyway, so there's no great loss there.

Facebook is very addictive and yes it's very uniform as in everyone's profile looks the same which isn't a bad thing (there's no pimped up pages) but the advantage MySpace has is it's media content it's a great place to sell an instrument where as you might advertise the instrument on E-Bay but have a link to MS so people can hear it play.
Anyway who's brave enough on here to post their Facebook names so we can all see what each other looks like? Come on i will if you do.
FB is much better for communication with closest friends and relations, but if you're musitian or a have a band, it's much better to expose yourself on myspace. You can upload your music, and everybody can hear you, and you don't need to be in the friends list to see other's profiles...

A scenario discussed is 'merging social graphs' when correlating multiple social networks makes it possible to reveal connections that a person has intentionally kept secret.

All the relatives that you don't really want to communicate with every day are on there and they'll soon find you and you'll be trapped! It's insidious and creepy. No-one takes MySpace seriously which is why it remains fun. I'm old by the way!

To do this go to the top right of the page and click settings - privacy settings Under that menu you can customize everything that is public to private you can block your in-laws or friends you've fallen out of touch with etc. The default is for everything to be public so I highly advise changing settings to your comfort level. You can even make it so that you cannot be found through search. You can also have certain security against friends you have already made. There is a custom filter and you can type in the names of those you want to restrict. Also you can go to the bottom of the page on the right and use facebook offline so that people don't know when you are online and won't start a chat session. That is if you are not interested in the chat feature.
Karenk- Or you can use the offline mode if you see someone on line you really don't want to chat with! I wish it was more like the AOL Instant Messenger in the sense that you can be "Offline" but still see who's online and selectively chat with them.

I think a lot of bands use Myspace to publicize, but I never see them because I never go there... and when I do, it freezes and their little music player won't play. If I were a band I'd make a group on facebook and link in some things through soundlantern, youtube, or podcasts.

I certainly wouldn't rely on any social networking site exclusively at this point, there are just so many other options with just as much or more traffic.

For those of you who apply for festivals, apparently organisers now will only look at your Myspace page to gauge the sort of band you are and not even bother with your cd. So the advice is make sure your MS page is up to date and has a good selection of your music.

Besides, I did all that work on myspace (and I like the personalization of a page--flashy or not) and keep it simple and easy to navigate, and then all my friends join Facebook, so I did. I haven't done much on FB, but it sure feels intrusive and gossipy--like everyone's in your biz all the time. At least w/myspace, it's all about YOU and if people want to inquire about YOU, you just send them the link and they can browse.
It's egocentric, I suppose, but it also helps out when people you haven't seen for awhile ask what you've been up to or to send pics. I just send them the myspace link and they can find out all they really are curious about (or if they were just asking to ask I don't have to waste my time with stuff they don't want to hear about and they don't have to look any farther than they want.) And you don't have to join to look.
I don't use myspace but don't really like what I have seen of it. I like Facebook because it is brilliant for keeping in touch with friends all over the world.

Just in case you haven't read enough yet - I'm 50 and love Facebook for friends (and you can totally control who you let in and how much they have access to) and MySpace pretty much just for bands and music. I'm heading there right now to check out the session group, too!

I'm on FB. I'm well past the age of consent and entering the age of grateful. I've been back in touch with many old friends bec of FB.
I do Myspace for the music. Why not do both?

FB is much better for communication with closest friends and relations, but if you're musitian or a have a band, it's much better to expose yourself on myspace. You can upload your music, and everybody can hear you, and you don't need to be in the friends list to see other's profiles...
