North east accordion shop(US)?

Hello all,
Anyone know of any shops in the PA, NJ, NY area that one might be able to try different button accordions (preferably C#/D)? I only know of a few good piano-accordion dedicated stores and the owners seem to think that not only B/C and C#/D are pointless when you could use a 3 row accordion but they seem to think button accordions in general are the devils work. Any info would be well appreciated,
-Sean

Re: North east accordion shop(US)?

-Check out The Button Box in Massachusetts. It may be further than you want to travel but they are button box-oriented and have a good reputation. http://www.buttonbox.com

-They stock a variety of free reed instruments including button boxes as their name indicates. You can check their stocklist for button boxes and concertinas available without a wait. They'll order instruments if you have a specific item in mind. I have a nice Saltarelle squeezebox purchased from them and have been tempted to try one of their own Morse brand english or anglo concertinas.

-A NY accordion store sells the Castagnari James Keane "Keanebox" http://www.jameskeane.com/ and
http://www.alexmusical.com/). Its based on the Castagnari Kriss but tuned by Alex.

-Good luck in your quest!

-Brian

There's the House of Music Traditions down in Washington DC. It's maybe a little south of where you want to go, but the Baltimore/DC area is only a couple hours drive south of Philly.

Look them up and give them a call and see what they have in stock. Maybe it would be worth the drive.

I bought a c/g Anglo from the Button Box, but I bought it online. I can't say what their actual store is like, but they are a great outfit and a real pleasure to do business with. Great customer service, too.

Re: North east accordion shop(US)?

well I go to school at James Madison in the Shenandoah valley and DC isn't a terrible drive from there at all, plus, I am there for a rugby tournament around easter. If anyone knows of any shops down near Charlottesville that'd be just as helpful! Thanks for all the help thus far

Re: North east accordion shop(US)?

I was just at the Button Box getting my BC retuned. The store is small, but imagine a table and bookshelf in the front room covered with only music books and CDs featuring accordions, and then a ten by ten back room, lined with shelves on three sides with nothing but dozens of concertinas and accordions, from the cheapest Hohner to pricey Castingaris worth more than my car. And a full service shop to take care of your maintenance and tuning issues. I could have spent hours giving all the instruments a try. And they are great people, who have always given me good service, well worth the drive!!!!!!

The signature accordion Castignari produced for James Keane is sold out of a master maker's shop near Times Square. It's called Alex Musical Instruments and is located on w48th. There's more information on www.jameskeane.com. And here's a video of James playing the keanebox: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AO5jE7hn_s
